SOUND OF CRISIS

a Maiden Monsters' road opera

SOUND OF CRISIS

performing in Marseille

FUTURE PLANS

In 2015, we will go to Italy!

But most of all, we want to produce a "real" road opera on stage, in Berlin!

We will for sure, continue working on the format, on the travels, and doing a research tour in Germany, too!

Watch this!

GREECE

In 2014, we went on to Thessaloniki and Athens.

Unfortunately, we had to leave our van at home and take the plane.

But that included that we had to take public transport in our beautiful dresses!

Here is the first impression from our stay in Thessaloniki. Enjoy!

MARSEILLE

In the framework of Marseille2013, we were invited to present a short version of the material we collected so far.

For this, we were combining and re-composing the following elements, which we call ROAD OPERA:

- video (re-edit of our videoblogs -> road movie)

- music (re-arrangement with Ableton Live)

- text (excerpts transformed into a libretto)

What does crisis sound like?

BERLIN

the topos of CRISIS

The ancient greek word signifies "choice, election, judgment, dispute, decision" but is nowadays mostly used in the sense of "sudden change, an unstable situation or a turning point".

Isn't it almost discerning that every European language refers to the same linguistic origins and as such, to its actual connotations?

We feel that "the crisis" (what crisis are we talking about, by the way?) is no longer signifying a turning point but instead something that is more persisting. "Crisis" today perpetuated into a powerful ideology in Europe that is used by politicians and other power players to cut peoples rights, freedom, democracy, participation etc. At the same time, "crisis" could be used as a universal, unifying force to gather Europes citizens in overcoming this ideology, too. Thats what we want to find out and search for; and therefore, we have to meet "experts in crisis"!

sidenote: where the money comes from

- private residency for 2013 through "Sound Development City" Zürich,

- travel funds through Rosa-Luxemburg- Stuftung in 2014

-> up to now, we decided to put most energy in our artistic work (tbc)

PORTUGAL

In Portugal, we went straight to Lisboa, crossing fires beneath the motorways because of the hot temperatures.

There, we met many people and recorded musicians. One of them was Adriana, who opened up a community kitchen in the neighbourhood of Muraria: Adrianas cozinha popular. That's also how we met the mayor of Lisbon and almost convinced him to sing along our "Song of crisis".

Did you know that there are only three (3!) families ruling the country? They are not paying taxes, but privatising the financial support of the EU.

SPAIN

In September 2013, we left Berlin and went to Spain (and Portugal & France) with our little van.

Our approach:

- Interviewing people in the streets, sharing thoughts and taking part in demonstrations and gatherings; meeting experts in aspects of crisis

- filming meetings and landscapes, searching for images of "the crisis"

- recordings of musicians and musical events on site

- our travel route: Berlin - San Sebastian - Galicia (heading on to Portugal) and then on to Madrid and Zarragoza.
