Does society affect depression in teenagers?

This phrase has gotten through to many people who are struggling with depression and suicide but it still leaves some untouched.

No, Society does not

  • It leaves negative effects on teenagers pressuring them into drugs and alcohol or relationships they aren’t ready for that can lead to depression amongst other things.
  • They’re judgmental views have pushed teenagers to alter themselves in unhealthy ways and hurt themselves.
  • And some parents have no idea that their kid has depression. “Brown University reported in 2002 that many parents simply do not recognize the symptoms of depression in their adolescent children. They found that even parents who have good communication with their children do not necessarily realize it when a child is depressed” (Statistics- Adolescence Depression)
  • It has no effect on the amount depression effects teenagers, what they do is their own business and they shouldn’t care what people think.
  • Teenagers know what they’re get into and should be able to handle the consequences.
  • Depression is a psychological problem that society has no impact on the mental problems of the youth. “Depressive illnesses are disorders of the brain. Brain-imaging technologies, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have shown that the brains of people who have depression look different than those of people without depression”

Society's affect on depression can lead to many things including self harm and suicide. And many people are out to be against these side effects.
