For me, these poems express my fear of growing up so fast and being lost in society. I also like to be childish, which is described by not capitalizing the letters in maggie and millie and molly and may.
A Couplet Poem Analysis
Grow Up
by Antony Nguyen
"Grow up", he says, and stares at me with those cold dead eyes.
I fear those distasteful 'jokes' and sarcastic sighs.
"I'm never growing up," I say to myself, and let out a grin.
"But I'll have to grow up someday," I ponder as I stroke my chin.
Why do they see the world so dark?
Like the dull coat on a golden meadowlark.
Why does it have to be carved in stone?
The fate on which I can never hone.
THEMIC Analysis
For whatever we lose(like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea
Title: maggie and milly and molly and may
Heed the Story:
Four girls play at the beach, one finds a shell that has the "sound of the sea", the second finds a washed-up star, the third is chased by a crab or a "horrible thing that races sideways", and the fourth girl finds a stone that she admires. "Losing yourself like a you or a me" is either death, or modern technology taking over our lives.
Emotion: The emotion presented in this poem is really innocent, and has a deep meaning which is explained in the end.
Musical Language: The poem rhymed with near-rhymes and real rhymes in an ABAB scheme, and the use of simile with the rock that is "small as a world and large as alone"
Imagery: Descriptions of the things the girls discovered: "horrible creature that blew bubbles while chasing sideways", "small as a world"
Connect: I think this story means that it's easy to lose ourselves in our modern society, which is fast paced; but getting away from it all and finding out more about our real and natural world can help us find ourselves.
may came home with a smooth round stone
and as large as alone.
and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways blowing bubbles:and
milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;
and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and
maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach (to play one day)
