All of these identities come together to create the person I am today (along with many other identities). Without these identities, I would not be the teacher candidate and future teacher that I am and hope to be. Being female, having a social justice education, and being white all come together to help give my students another perspective as well as creating a space for them to feel free to express themselves. Identifying as a type 9 on the Enneagram test allows me to help my students find their strong suits and how they will work together with their own personalities. Without these combinations of identities, I would not be the Carolyn I am today. I may be still be kind-hearted., or patient, or willing to make my classroom welcoming and inclusive, but through these identities I can do that with my own abilities in the way I think is best.
Reflecting
Having the identity of being a woman allows me to help others and lift them up in the ways that I have been lifted up. In my relationships, it has helped me each my friends, no matter what their gender identity is, that they can fight for the things that make them happy to be them. Being female sometimes can get the view that I am supposed to do certain jobs and that I can't do other things. It makes it a little harder to do things out of the norm, but that is what makes me proud to be a woman: when I get to prove others wrong about their previous conceptions of what i can do.
In teaching, this identity can be useful because I can use my previous experiences of overcoming as an example for my students in teaching them that they can do whatever they want because I could. This could potentially hinder my relationships with my students because they may take it as the girls are better than the boys, which is not true. What I hope to portray through my identity as a woman, is that no matter what your identity is, whether it be your skin color, gender, ethnicity, etc., they are capable of anything they aspire to do.

Having this as a part of my identity gives me the opportunity to help speak out for those who can't, but also keep in check and educate others who don't understand. In my personal relationships, this affects those around me because I am definitely more blunt about making sure that those around me are being conscious of what they are saying and how they are speaking about others. This definitely changes my perspective of others because it gives me a window and an opportunity to see into their lives. I know I have not experienced hardships due to my race, gender identity, etc., but I feel that being educated in a way helps me be more sympathetic to those around me who struggle. Being educated in topics of today society and understanding that social justice needs to happen, gives me a new perspective on the world and helps me to identify things in my everyday life that are not alright and need to change.
After taking the Enneagram test, I have learned more about myself and about how I interact with others. Being a type 9 allows others who know about the personality test to better understand me and how I would work best with them. It allows people to have a perception of me before knowing me fully. Sometimes this can be helpful when in new situation, however sometimes it can be harmful with people coming in with a preconception of me. With having knowledge of hs test, I am able to better understand other people I meet and better understand how I should work with them. It gives me a certain expectation of how I think things will go in our relationship.
This will be important in my future classrooms and for my future students because I will be able to know how to create a welcome and inviting environment for all students who may come into my classroom. I will also be able to better educate my students in social justice and controversial topics in society so that they are capable of making a change in their community from a young age. I wish that when I was younger, my teachers would have focused on teaching us how to be advocates for others because I think that is a special quality such a young person can have.
I think that this part of my identity will be very important and useful in my classroom. It is a part of who I am and how I act around others. The peacekeeper and patient aspect of being a type 9 is very useful in the classroom because it means that I will be able to stay calm and create a warm and welcoming environment for my students. I think identifying as a type 9 will help students be able to see that we are all different, but we can all work together in different ways. I can also use it as a teaching moment to show my students that whatever works well for me won't for them and vice versa.
Reflection
This is an identity and privilege i am very grateful to have. I definitely take it for granted, but it is something that I am working to use as an advantage for people who don't have the privilege that comes with my skin color. I hope to use my privilege as a white person to stand up in places others can not. I want to use my skin color as a platform for others to her how I shouldn't be the one to have to stand up for others just for people to listen. Others should be able to stand up for themselves and still have people listen to them. Others may have the perception that I am the rich, white, privileged girl. Maybe I am, maybe I'm not, but my skin coor shouldn't be the defining factor of it.
This is a part of my identity that I am kind of nervous to have in my classroom. My plan right now is to teach in inner-city Chicago where the population is majority not white. I don't want to be seen as the white teacher coming in to save the poor black children. This is a part of my identity that I think will affect my classroom no matter what because it is something that parents and students will comment upon. I hope to use this part of my identity to help bring a perspective into the classroom but also change the stereotypes of the young white teacher coming in to save the poor little kids.
