Memory

Iconic memory: sensory register that briefly holds mental representations of visual stimuli

Echoic memory: sensory register that briefly holds mental representations of auditory stimuli

Implicit memory: memory to perform a procedure or skill, contains information gathered through psychomotor activities

Explicit memory: memory of specific information like names, faces and the likes

  • episodic memory: memories of events experienced by the person
  • semantic memory: general knowledge, contains concepts and rules

The process by which we encode, store and retrieve information

sensory information are modified so that it can be placed in memory

the maintenance of information

maintenance rehearsal: mental repetition of information to keep it in memory

the initial and momentary storage of information, lasts about 1/4 of a second

elaborative rehearsal: coding in which new information is related to old ones

the location of stored information and its return to consciousness

the type or stage of memory that can hold 7 +/- 2 information for up to a minute

The type or stage of memory capable of relatively permanent storage

Primacy effect: This is the tendency for the first items presented in a series to be remembered better or more easily

Encoding failure: unattended information is not encoded into memory

Interference: information interferes with retrieval of other information

Memory trace decay: if memory is not used, neural connection can decay

Recency effect: The phenomenon that when people are asked to recall in any order the items on a list, those that come at the end of the list are more likely to be recalled than the others .

Spacing effect: The phenomenon whereby humans more easily remember or learn items when they are studied a few times spaced over a long time span.
