Platelets & ABO System

  • Platelets- specialized cell fragment in the blood.
  • Platelets look like small specs of purple disoriented dots surrounding the lymphocyte.
  • In circulating blood, platelets are small, nearly colorless bodies that usually appear as irregular spindles or oval disks about 2 to 4 micro meters in diameter.
  • As soon as blood is removed from a vessel, platelets adhere to each other and assume various shapes as well as irregular forms.
  • Average adult amounts 250,000 per mm cubed of blood.
  • Normal amounts is between 150,000 to 400,000 per mm cubed of blood.
  • There are NO differences between the sexes in platelet count.
  • Platelets play an important role in both hemostasis and blood clotting (coagulation).
  • Hemostasis- the stoppage of blood flow and may occur as an end result of any one of several body defense mechanisms.
  • Blood Clotting- to plug ruptured vessels to stop bleeding and prevent loss of a vital body fluid.
  • Platelet plug- helps to stop the flow of blood into the tissues.
  • The formation of a temporary platelet plug is an important step in hemostasis which results when platelets undergo a change caused by an encounter with a damaged capillary wall, or with underlying connective tissue fibers.
  • The transformation results in the creation of sticky platelets which bind to underlying tissues and each other.
  • Platelets plugs are extremely important in controlling so called "Microhemorrahages," which may involve a break in a single capillary.
  • Platelets are formed in the red bone marrow, lungs, and, to some extent, in the spleen by fragmentation of very large (40 to 100 Micrometers) cells known as Megakaryocytes.
  • Platelets have a short life span, an average of about 7 days.
