Iconicity

of

images

ACTIVITY

  • Take a photograph (realistic image) from a magazine.

  • Draw the same image in a figurative way and abstract way.

  • Let´s play!

"This is not a pipe".

René Magritte

(1898-1967).

.Not only the drawing or image of an object represents it, but also the written word does.

We talk about "iconicity" when we want to analyze the level of similarity of an image with reality.

We talk about "iconicity" when we want to analyze the level of similarity of an image with reality.

Three main levels

iconocity

Example

ICONICITY

It expresses the different levels of similarity between an image and its reality.

  • High level of iconicity: realistic images.

  • Medium level of iconicity: figurative images.

  • Low level of iconicity: abstract images.

First of all, we are going to see the difference between realistic and figurative.

Take a look at all these Picasso´ s paintings.

.

In a realistic image (of a hare, for example), the image is quite similar to reality, as we can see both in the photograph on the right and in the watercolour painting on the left (Durero).

This is a picture

of a wave.

Realistic image.

High iconicity.

This is a painting

Figurative image.

Medium iconicity.

Look at these three images, where we can see a couple kissing, but in a very different way.

In a figurative image, the similarity with reality is smaller, but we can still identify what it is represented. We can see it in these sculptures made by Barry Flanagan, where we can identify hares but, obviously, they do not look like a real ones.

The kiss,

Rodin.

The kiss,

Klimt.

The kiss, Brancusi.

The same happens in these images, also considered as figurative ones.

We can also see it in this geometric abstraction of Vasarely (left), Mondrian (right) and Delaunay (center).

IMPORTANT: the images can be realistic or figurative no matter what it is showed in them. We can see logical scenes or not, like in these paintings (Dalí, realistic, on the left, and Chagall, figurative, on the right).

So, what is abstraction?

Abstract art is a style that emphasizes the chromatic, formal and structural aspects of a work, without trying to imitate the natural models.

In the abstract art, opposite to figurative, we can not recognize real figures. It represents non natural forms, using imagination and freedom.

We can see it in these paintings made by Miró (left), Kandinsky (center) and Pollock (right).
