Assisted Squat Pivot Transfer

Assisted Squat Pivot Transfer

Squat Pivot Transfer Conclusions

Safety Considerations: person must be aware of safety precautions, have good balance/stability and have supervision

Benefits: increase independence, simple transfer

Drawbacks: not for everyone, fall risk

Supervised Squat Pivot Transfer

  • Same preparation as supervised squat pivot
  • Person assisting places their outside foot in between the patients feet and grabs the back of the gait belt of the patient
  • Rocks back and forth 3 times with the patient to gain momentum
  • Transfer patient into wheelchair

Performing a Squat Pivot Transfer

  • Person will scoot to EOB
  • Person will place hand closest to wheelchair to furthest armrest of the wheelchair
  • Place foot closest to the wheelchair to furthest wheel of the wheelchair
  • Use upper body strength to squat and pivot into the wheelchair

Squat Pivot Transfer

Popover Transfer

  • Make sure wheelchair is as close to the bed as possible with breaks locked and foot rests removed.
  • A second person may providing support by stabilizing the transfer to chair.
  • Person will scoot toward EOB.
  • Putting knees together helps stabilize during the transfer
  • Patient utilizes head/hip relationship: movement of head in one direction results in movement of the hips in the opposite direction toward the support surface being transferred to
  • Person will use UE strength to support body and "pop over" onto transfer surface.

Popover Transfer

Ideal population: people with trunk control, leg strength as well as balance and stability

Functional abilities required to perform functional mobility: able to understand the situation (including safety precautions), some upper body strength (for supervised transfer)

Tips/Tricks: The use of momentum will help people who are transferring both independently and assisted

Popover Transfer Conclusions

Ideal Population: people who have strength/stability, upper body strength, leg strength and trunk control

Functional abilities required to perform functional mobility related to task: Strong upper body

Tips/Tricks: Use momentum to popover to other transfer surface; putting knees together is helpful

Safety Considerations: performed alone therefore could become dangerous if not done properly (falls), must take all beginning precautions to make sure wheelchair does not roll away

Benefits: No need of assistance; Increased Independence with transferring

Drawbacks: Require strong upper body! Fall risk; Not appropriate for everyone

Supervised Squat Pivot Transfer

Popover Transfer

Preparation:

  • Wheelchair is pushed up as close as possible to the bed (with wheels locked and foot rests off)
  • Wheelchair and bed are the same height
  • Person is wearing non-skid socks
