Mendeleev's Periodic Table and Moseley's contribution.

Dmitri Mendeleev

Periodic Law

Mendeleev's Periodic Law stated that a Periodic Table must follow certain rules.

-Elements are listed by atomic weight.

-Elements are grouped based off reoccurring patterns.

-Gaps are left for unknown atoms.

-Atomic NUMBER was arbitrary and based off a position, determined by other factors.

-Dmitri Mendeleev was born in 1834 in Toblosk, Russia.

-He attended Heidelberg University and Saint Petersbergs State University.

-In 1849 Dmitri traveled across the state of Russia in search of higher education. Dmitri did very well in school.

-In his later life, Dmitri returned to Heidelberg University to study, this is where he formulated the periodic law and the first table following that law.

Synthesis and Questions

WHY?

Henry Moseley

Thanks to

the brilliance

of many great

scientists like

Mendeleev

and Moseley

we have the

periodic table.

Any Questions?

Moseley's Contribution.

**This is on the test**

British Physicist and colleague of Ernest Rutherford, Henry Moseley was born in 1887.

-He attended Eton College, Trinity College,

Oxford, and University of Manchester.

-He worked closely with many great

physicists.

-He made his greatest discovery in 1913.

-He died two years later as a royal

engineer in the british army.

In 1913 Henry Moseley was studying the periodic table when he realized that sometimes the Atomic mass of an element was ignored when the element needed to be in a certain category. Mosley was puzzled by this, so he decided to investigate further.

-He discovered that each element radiates x-rays at a unique rate.

-He plotted this on a graph and found a straight

line. ------------------------------>

-Applying these numbers, he found that the

ATOMIC NUMBER = NUMBER OF PROTONS.
