Towns in North Carolina within the Catawba River Basin

Future Consideration

Water Restrictions

  • The IBT would be considered when precautionary measures are implemented.
  • Drought were to dissipate.

There is currently a drought in Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, and several other counties - 11 in total - of North Carolina that have begun to incorporate water usage restrictions in order to preserve water. If the drought were to continue, then the transfer of water would harm them greatly.

We are not Willing

  • It will impede our own development economically.
  • It will affect the native ecosystem and wildlife.
  • It powers 11 hydro-power plants, 4 coal plants, and 2 nuclear plants.
  • The water is polluted to a certain extent.
  • NC has a daily use of 11,303.37 million gallons; no room for transfer which would increase usage.

Water Request

Additional Reasons

Elected officials of Concord and Kannapolis, NC, request an IBT of 25 million gallons of water a day from the Catawba River.

  • Increase in water usage will consume the limited supply at a faster rate.
  • Pollution would hasten within the water.
  • The Catawba River is additionally used by South Carolina.
  • There is no rigid water usage restriction in place.

185 million gallons of water a week

750 million a month

9125 million a year
