This was my favorite paragraph because I believe that you meet everyone for a reason, and this paragraph sums that up. The people you meet are there to help you or hurt you, but your experiences always make you stronger. This paragraph also tells people to live for themselves, and not just exist. The difference between existing and living is that existing is going through life pleasing others, and living is going through life pleasing yourself. This paragraph shows that everyone you meet can help you achieve your goals by inspiring you or tearing you down and needing to prove them wrong.
" The truth of it was, I'd been running the wrong experiment my whole life, and while Cassidy was the first person to realize, she didn't add the elements that allowed me to proceed down a different path. She lent a spark, perhaps, or tendered a flame, but the arson was mine.Oscar Wide once said that to live is the rarest thing in the world, because most people just exist, and that's all. I don't know if he's right, but I do know that I spent a long time existing, and now, I intend to live."(362)
Having good friends helped Ezra through the tough times in his life
Tennis was very important to Ezra, even after his accident
The themes of this book are to persevere through hard times and that good friends can make tough situations better. Because of Ezra's accident, he wanted to give up because he couldn't play tennis anymore and wasn't friends with the popular crowd. By reconnecting with old friends and meeting someone who gave his life meaning again, he persevered and started to regain control of his life. It was really up to him start living for himself, but friends made it easier.
Debate tournaments helped Ezra realize there is more to life than sports
Ezra Faulkner had been the king of Eastwood High in California. He had tons of friends, was captain of the tennis team and was a role model for other students, until he was in a car accident that changed his life forever. He could no longer play tennis, and none of his so called friends came to visit him and see if he was alright. On his first day of senior year, he felt more alone than he had in all of high school, until he met Cassidy Thorpe. She had moved to town recently, and they soon became friends. Because of her he reconnected with his former friends from before his glory days in tennis, and in return didn't feel so alone. After being written in as a prank for the debate team by Cassidy, they spent the weekend together at a tournament and became a couple. They were inseparable up until the night of homecoming. She didn't show up at Ezra's house and he found her at the park, claiming their relationship was a scam and that she had a boyfriend the entire time. Ezra believed she was lying, and tried to figure out the real reason for their breakup. He ended up discovering how him and Cassidy are connected from more than just being a couple, and that no matter how much you love someone, you cant always be together for one reason or another.
The main character, Ezra, changed a lot from the beginning to the end of the book. In the beginning he was on top of the world, with tons of friends, was captain of the tennis team, and was very well thought of. Because of the car accident he was in, his friends distanced themselves from him because he wasn't "like them" anymore. As he starts to become friends with Cassidy and become apart of his group before high school again, his personality changes and he isn't as concerned with what people think of him as what he thinks of himself. By the end of the book, he has changed into a completely different person that wants to live, and not just exist. He developed the theme because he persevered through his so called friends ditching him, and his friends before high school made the transformation easier.
Ezra and Cassidy's favorite place to go when they were together, the swings at a playground
This book was very enjoyable to read. The book flowed easily and wasn't choppy or hard to understand. Although it took a few chapters to really get into the book, the rest of the book was very well thought out and full of details that made it interesting to read. I thought this because I became invested in the characters and could feel the emotions they were feeling because it was so detailed. It was very easy to relate to the book because they are high school kids who have trouble fitting in sometimes, which is very common amongst teenagers. I would recommend this book more for girls because it was a love story, but boys may like it too because it was written in the perspective of a boy. Anyone who enjoys a happy ending would like this book.
