Extended Equation
CO2(g)+H2O(l)
H(aq)+HCO3(aq)
H2CO3=CO2+H2O
Carbon Dioxide(CO2(g)) reacts with water(H2O(l)) which forms carbonic acid(H2CO3(aq)). Carbonic acid may loose protons to form bicarbonate (which is HCO3-) and carbonate(CO32-). This causes protons to be set free to the water, which overall decreases pH.
Daily lives:
This reaction occurs in our bodies when we go through cellular respiration. Carbon dioxide is dissolved in the blood, from there it is taken by red blood cells and are converted to carbonic acid, which is the process of carbonic anhydrous.
Carbonic acid breaks down to produce carbon dioxide gas and liquid water.
H2CO3(aq)=CO2(g)+H2O(l)
Hydrogen2Carbonate3
Carbon Dioxide2+Water
Hot chickens, pH of the blood,acid rain, and thermostating the earth all share the process of carbon dioxide and carbonic acid.
Hot chickens?-
We keep cool by perspiration that evaporates from our skin, but chickens do not perspire, they pant to keep cool. As they pant, they eliminate carbon dioxide and the concentration of carbonate dissolved in their blood decreases.
When carbon dioxide dissolves in the ocean, carbonic acid forms. This leads to higher acidity, mainly near the surface. This has been proven to interfere with shell growth in marine life. It is also the suspected cause for reproductive disorders in some fish.
