Response

  • Population not prepared
  • No technological advances to warn people about blizzard formation
  • Conditions didn't allow rescue workers to transport into areas affected until the 9th of February
  • Rescue workers had to leave just two days after arriving due to another blizzard hitting the area
  • Couldn't have been prevented but the death toll could have been lower

Facts

  • Began on February 3, 1972
  • Ended February 9, 1972
  • Deadliest blizzard recorded
  • Temperatures dropped down to -13 degrees Fahrenheit
  • 26 feet of snow
  • Blizzard followed a four-year drought

Effects

  • Telephone lines snapped
  • Cars and commuter trains were crushed and buried
  • Water pipes froze
  • Homes were destroyed
  • Deadly flu spread through villages in rural areas
  • No water, food, or heat
  • 200 villages were destroyed

Death Toll

Formation of the Blizzard

  • 4,000 people
  • Extreme cold
  • Lack of food, water, medical attention
  • buried by snow
  • Kakka, Kumar, and Sheklab had no survivors

Three things required:

1. Air cold at surface

2. Atmosphere has to have a lot of moisture

3. Lift that causes warm air to lift over cold

Add strong winds and snow and a blizzard is formed

Blizzard defined as a storm that has:

  • large amounts of snow or blowing snow
  • winds surpassing 35mph
  • visibilities less than 1/4 mile for at least 3 hours
