Men vs. Women Power-

  • Men were much stronger than women.
  • Men were warriors and made all of the decisions for their communities without the help of women.
  • It was a law that men ultimately ruled over women.
  • Women were always put under the power of men, no matter if they were married or if they had a male family member that was still alive.
  • Example- If a woman's husband died, she would be put under the power of her husband's dad or brother.
  • The only power a woman had was the power of her personality to affect her direct family.

5th Level= Scribes

Scribes wrote down and recorded important information for their kings.

6th Level= Soldiers and Military Men

7th Level= Government Officials

Rich people, priests

Top Level= King or Top Ruler

Sumerian Hierarchy

and Organization

4th Level= Merchants

Merchants made items such as pottery and tools.

They traded these items along with natural resources, metals, and building materials with each other and people from other cities.

  • 2nd Level = Women
  • 3rd Level= Farmers

Sumerian Hierarchy from the Ground Up:

80-90 percent owned their own land.

If they didn't grow enough food for the year, they would have to borrow some from their neighbors and repay it later.

Their land was taken away from them if they couldn't repay what they had borrowed.

Bottom Level= Slaves

Slaves were the least powerful people.

They were used for all physical work.

Slaves were made up of prisoners from other cities, criminals, poor people, and orphans.

Slaves were considered "inferior".

Inferior- low in importance or value.

If they ever tried to escape, they would be punished terribly.

They were owned by rich people.
