The mixture of hexachloroethane, aluminum and zinc oxide inside the bomb is ignited and released into the air creating a very opaque cloud of smoke in the immediate area which blinds and harms the surrounding people.
The Zinc Chloride found inside the bomb is a chemical compound like we learned in class. (ZnCl2)
If exposed to the bomb will affect respiratory system and the integumentary system the most severely.
The main affected system is the respiratory system beause the released chemical is a gas and if inhaled can lead to severe damage in the lungs.
Second affected system is the integumentary system which if comes in contact with the smoke can cause minor stings and irritation.
Unbalanced
Al + C2Cl6 + ZnO --> Al2O3 + ZnCl + C
Balanced
4Al + C2Cl6 + 6ZnO --> 2Al2O3 + 6 ZnCl + 2 C
-Hexachloroethane 45%
-Zinc Oxide 45%
-Fine Aluminum 10%
This mixture was used in the american armed forces and is known as HC. A charge with a weight of about 8 oz. can produce over 100,000 cu. ft. of a dense gray white smoke.
-Hexachloroethane 53%
-Zinc Dust 44%
-Magnesium Oxide 3%
This formula is similar to HC. The smoke consists of zinc chloride.
