Preparation Phase

Purpose

“THE STUDY OF THE MECHANICS OF THE MOVEMENTS OF LIVING ORGANISMS.”

BIOMECHANICS ALLOWS US TO ANALYZE AND BREAK DOWN A SKILL INTO PARTS AND CORRECT THE FINER DETAILS. TO AVERT INJURY AND TO IMPROVE THE ATHLETES PERFORMANCE.

The server bends their extended foot’s knee (non-dominant) and follows up by bending forward at the hip. This produces a force in the torso, abs and this is transferred to your upper body. Throughout the serve both the shoulders and hips must be facing the net. The body will have no horizontal velocity.

Summation of forces

Stability & Mobility

Stability is dependent on the centre of Gravity being directly above the Base of Support. Mobility is the consolidation of motor control, strength, and flexibility necessary to complete the desired movement efficiently and without injury (LRVB, 2015)

Summation of forces are to obtain the maximum amount of combined force using different parts of the human body.

Levers

Levers have an axis or fulcrum, weight and force. In a serve the fulcrum is the elbow, the weight is the ball and the effort is the force channeled from the biceps, torso and thighs.

Toss

The fulcrum is moved backwards leaded by the elbow. The palm is facing away from the ear. The non-dominant arm is used in the toss and the arm is kept straight.

When the ball is thrown up is the best time to take a step forward

Execution Phase

The center of percussion is the best place to hit in the ball in the case of a short individual the ‘sweet spot’ directly under the ball but for me it would be a little higher.

Follow through

In my follow through, my elbow was bent and the follow through was across my chest rather than past my pocket.

Recommendation

1. Throw the ball 2-3 meters into the air and practice making it land directly in front of my non-dominant foot.

2. Once this is done practice catching the ball after throwing it by taking one step with the non-dominant foot and catching it will below the ball with your arms as extended as possible.

3. Then practice the arm movement and hit the ball directly where you were catching the ball previous. It’s best to remember to take the step forward before the arm is moved though the axis.
