European Influence

  • The first Europeans to reach Thailand were the Portuguese in 1511.
  • They were followed by the Dutch in 1605
  • The English in 1612 and the French in 1662
  • 1688 the French were expelled and Thailand adopted an isolationist policy
  • The European colonial powers threatened in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but Thailand survived as the only Southeast Asian state to avoid European colonial rule because the French and the British decided it would be a neutral territory to avoid conflicts between their colonies.

  • Southwest - tropical; rainy, warm, cloudy monsoon (mid-May to September)

Music

The wai is the common form of greeting and adheres to strict rules of protocol:

  • Raising both hands

  • Palms joined with the fingers pointing upwards as if in prayer

  • Lightly touching the body somewhere between the chest and the forehead

The wai is both a sign of respect as well as a greeting

Dance

Thai music has a lot of percussion instruments of different sizes, made of wood, metal or leather. There are stringed and wind instruments also

There are three distinctive parts of Thai classical dance:

  • Khon- very stylized with traditional dance forms and brightly colored masks

  • Lakhon- dances usually depict folk stories and are performed by a group

  • Fawn Thai- related to the folk music of a particular region of Thailand

Instruments:

  • The klong tham and khim are of Persian origin
  • The jakhe of Indian origin
  • The klong jin of Chinse origin
  • The klong kaekof Indonesian origin

  • Thailand has 50.4 million acres of farm land, 24.7 million acres of that is under rice cultivation.

  • Thailand continues to rely heavily on agriculture

  • In 2001, agricultural products accounted for 11.7% of exports and Thailand's agricultural trade surplus was nearly $4.5 billion which is 10th in the world.

  • There is a unique eggplant that is only gown in Thailand

Thai Jasmine Rice

  • Cassava (tapioca), traditionally important in Thailand, totaled 16.5 million tons

  • Provides about 95% of the world's cassava exports

  • Sugarcane production reached 52.8 million tons
  • The national dish of Thailand

Jasmine rice is a common food in Thailand and it usually accompanies a main meat dish.
