-Thomson's main experiment was the Cathode Ray experiment. These experiments allowed for him to observe "the nature of electric discharges in a high-vacuum cathode-ray tube."
-In order to conduct his Cathode Ray experiment, J.J Thomson required a "Crookes Tube", which is a tube, containing a vacuum, that is used to test electrical discharges. J.J. Thomson also used electric plates to produce a positive anode and a negative cathode.
J.J. Thomson acquired data from the Cathode Ray experiment by using two electric plates. One of the plates gave out a positive anode (Electrode with positive charge) while the other gave out a negative cathode (Electrode with negative charge). He thought that the rays would be deflected by the charged plates, which was correct. The Cathode rays were deflected by the electrical charge, proving that there were particles carrying a negative charge in the beams themselves.
-J.J Thomson's Cathode Ray experiment proved that negatively charged particles did exist, which allowed him to create his "Plum Pudding Model". While preforming his experiment, Thomson saw that the rays traveling through the negative cathode were eventually sent back after reaching the positive anode. This proved that the ray that had been deflected back consisted of negatively particles, later dubbed "electrons".
-J.J Thomson's major experiments proved that beams of Cathode rays were in fact negatively charged. The beams were completely composed of electrons. He had came to this conclusion after injecting cathode rays into the high-vacuum tube, and then by recording and analyzing his results, which was that the rays did contain negatively charged particles. After discovering the electron through these experiments, Thomson was able to create his famous "Plum Pudding Model". The model, as stated earlier, shows a positively charged atom with negatively charged atoms in it.
-J.J Thomson, or Joesph John Thomson, was born on the 18th of December, 1856.
-These experiments were able to prove the existence of electrons in atoms.
-He had conducted his experiments on electrons through the Cathode Ray Experiment in the year of 1897. J.J. Thomson came up with the Plum Pudding Model after discovering the electron in his Cathode Ray experiments, and also named them "Corspsucles." Later on, in 1905 Thomson's experiments led him to the discovery of the natural radioactivity of potassium. Thomson also proved that the element of hydrogen contains one singular electron per atom.
-J.J Thomson's Plum Pudding Model shows an entirely positive atom with electrons lodged inside of it. Thomson believed that with the negatively charged electrons in the atom, the two charges would cancel each other out, leaving the atom with a neutral charge.
- Along with receiving his own Nobel Peace Prize, he was able to watch his close colleagues receive their own Nobel Peace such as Ernest Rutherford in 1908 and Francis William Aston in 1922. One of Aston's major accomplishments was his discovery on the isotopes of elements, while Rutherford, through his gold foil experiment, discovered that atoms contain a nucleus surrounded by electrons. However, none of his colleges had collaborated with him while he had been conducting his Cathode Ray experiments.
-His father had run an antiquarian bookshop, while his mother's family had worked with textiles, so his background had no influence on his research or discoveries.
-J.J. Thomson's discovery of electrons should be credited in many aspects of chemistry that we learn today. His work helped improve the development of the Standard model in Particle Physics. Also, Thomson should be credited for discovering the electron, which changed the whole world of science in nearly every aspect. Before his experiment, scientists did not of this subatomic particle. In todays' world, thanks to his work, we now know that the electron exists in the atom and that the atom contains electromagnetic force within it.
