From 1467-1568 is known as sengoku or "warring states" period. The emperor became a figurehead with the real power with the Daimyo (great name). This new Japanese feudalism was similar to European feudalism in many ways. Daimyo fought to gain control of territory.
Violent and ambitious, this daimyo wanted control of all of Japan, His motto "rule the empire by force". Even with his capturing of the Capital city Kyoto, and his victories over his enemies, his was unable to unite Japan. he ultimately committed seppuku in 1582.
Defeating his rivals at the Battle of Sekigahara, gained him respect and loyalty of daimyo all across Japan. Three years later the unification of Japan was complete, and Tokugawa becomes shogun and founds the Tokugawa Shogunate which will last until 1867. He then moves the capital from Kyoto to Edo which later becomes Tokyo
"Take care of the people. Strive to be virtuous. Never neglect to protect the country." was his advise to his son on his deathbed
After Nobunaga killed himself, Toyotomi, continued his mission. He sought to destroy all hostile daimyo, gain control of all japan, and eventually take over China. By 1590 he controlled most of Japan, and two years later he went to war with Korea. When Hideyoshi died in 1598, all his troops withdrew from Korea.
The social order went Emperor, Shogun, Daimyo, Samurai, then peasants and artisans. Merchants started as the lowest class but gained importance as the economy grew. Peasants made up four-fifths of the population and faced hardships such as taxation. Haiku's and Kabuki theater was popular, and new art, drama, and literature styles were formed.
