Elizabethan Laws and Government

Creation of Laws

  • Laws were created by Parliament

  • The Monarch had to authorize the laws in order for them to go into effect

  • Laws could also be ammended by Parliament

  • The monarch had the power to veto a bill or law from Parliament

  • Parliament also could deny a bill made by the Monarch

Law Enforcement

  • The law was enforced by a Constable for each town

  • Ale-conners ensured that laws concerning quality of Ale were observed

  • Churchwardens were responsible for the church's laws

  • These laws were the highest legal authority in the land

Elections

  • These local Constable's or Sheriff's were also responsible for elections

  • Although there were elections they were only to vote for members of Parliament

  • Monarchs were not elected but were chosen according to their bloodline
