Shingles Chain of Infection
Organism
- The varicella zoster virus is what initially causes chicken pox.
- Once you get chicken pox the virus remains dormant, as you become an adult it can be activated again, which is known as SHINGLES!
Reservoir
- The nervous system
- Fluid filled blisters
- The virus exits through the fluid filled blisters.
- Exposure to shingles will not cause you to get shingles.
- Shingles occurs when the virus is reactivated from being dormant.
- If someone with shingles comes in contact with someone who has never had chicken pox, then they may get chicken pox.
- The virus can only be spread when the blisters are fluid-filled.
- The person is NOT contagious before the blisters, or after the blisters have crusted over.
Portal of Entry
- Eyes, nose, mouth (from coming in contact with blister fluid).
- Virus remains dormant in nervous system, until it is activated.
Vulnerable Hosts
- The elderly.
- People with compromised immune systems.
- People who have never had chicken pox.
- You may first have flu-like symptoms, in addition to itching, tingling, and pain in the area of the rash.
- The pain usually occurs several days or weeks before the rash shows up.
- In 3 to 5 days, the rash turns into fluid-filled blisters.
- The rash heals in about 2 to 4 weeks.
- Get vaccinated with both the chicken pox vaccine and the shingles vaccine.
- Avoid people who have shingles or chicken pox.
How to treat
- Antiviral medications will shorten the length of shingles.
- Treat symptoms with pain/fever medicine, anti-itch cream.
