  • Emily was a very famous suffragette.
  • She faced 9 prison sentences and force-feeding.
  • Her most famous act was at Epsom Downs Derby in 1913.

  • Organizing Secretary of WSPU.
  • Editor of The Suffragette (a type of newspaper for women).
  • Got a degree in Law but could not practice because she was a woman.
  • went to prison twice and then ran away to Paris where she continued to fight for women's rights.

Sylvia

  • Dora was one of the youngest Suffragettes, (only 17), so was known as 'The Baby Suffragette'.
  • She came from a middle-class background as most other Suffragettes.
  • She was arrested for protesting, spent 6 days in prison and then taken to court.
  • She was dismissed by the judge because she was too young.
  • “Don’t call me the ‘Baby Suffragette' I am not a baby really. In May next year I shall be eighteen years of age. Surely for a girl that is a good age?”

Emmeline Pankhurst

  • In 1909 Emmerline became the leader of the Suffragettes.
  • They created the WSPU (Women's Social and Political Union).
  • They argued for the equal political treatment of women and to secure the vote for women.
  • She was arrested many times and wen on many hunger strikes.
