Characteristics
Studying abroad is the act of a student pursuing educational opportunities in a country other than one's own. This can include primary, secondary and post-secondary students.
Each year, over one million students from around the world study for a period of time outside their home countries. This opportunity to experience different cultures is invaluable, helping to prepare you for participation in a truly global 21st century.

The Institute for the International Education of Students, or IES Abroad, is a non-profit study abroad organization that administers study abroad programs for U.S. college-aged students. Founded in 1950 as the Institute of European Studies, the organization has since been renamed to reflect additional offerings in Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Latin America.

Established in 1963, Semester at Sea is the only global education program of its kind in the world. Using a ship as our traveling campus, undergraduates, lifelong learners, faculty and lecturers live and learn together while circumnavigating the globe each fall and spring semester and exploring a world region in the summer term.
