All of my new friends in Colorado!
During my research this summer I noticed a common denominator among the non-profits I worked with: everyone was in need of hygiene kits. In an attempt to discover a way that Marco's could meet this need I came across guiltlessgiving.com, a website selling assembled hygiene kits in bulk at very reasonable prices. Before leaving CO I spoke with the owners and suggested Marco's tack on an optional donation to a single menu item that will pay for the kit which may then be distributed via the Marian Soup Kitchen or the Acacia Project.
July 18th, 10:30-1:30 @ Marco's Briargate
Many of the non-profits I was working with were invited to this meeting to hear the back story of Marco's and the purpose behind their pizza as well as how they could acquire an intern from Harding University, what this would require, and how beneficial a business as missions minded intern could be for their cause.
Those in attendance included Compassion International, Partners in Housing, Westside CARES, Angels of America's Fallen, and the Homeless Foundation.
Mercy's Gate is a non-profit working out of the Rocky Mt. Calvary Church in CO Springs. Each summer they collect school supplies and stuff backpacks to be distributed to struggling families with school-age children.
Marco's Involvement:
Marco's offered to pay their employees 2 hours of pay to go and spend 2 hours volunteering. In total we had 4 employees participate, but many more commented to me later that they would like to get involved in the future!
Karen Serfass, Director
This grassroots non-profit works out of Vanguard Church in Colorado Springs and serves meals to those in residential transition every Thursday at 7 P.M. Karen dreams of opening a transitional house for all of her 'kids' so that she can help them break out of the cycle of poverty.
Marco's Involvement:
Marco's gave Karen around 500 gift cards for free pizza to sell at $10 each. Half will pay for the card and half is for the Acacia Project. Karen takes these cards with her when she speaks at churches as an opportunity for people to get involved!
Pasquale Giammarco, or “Chef Marco” as we call him, was born in Italy. He moved with his family to the United States when he was just nine years old. Not finding the real tastes of his homeland anywhere, years later he cooked them up himself. After some serious arm twisting, he was persuaded to share his recipes with others, like the Cheathams and Parkers, the local owners of this restaurant here in Briargate.
These two local families saw the need for a business whose primary mission was to re-connect and serve the community and support good works. The items on this menu generate financial support for causes and provide a direct way to feed local people in need. As you see them donating their time here or around town, please let them know of any opportunities you know of for this philanthropic business to help others.
