Invention of Vaccination

By: Arjan Sandhu

Edward Jenner

Inventions - Pictures

2. Edward Jenner developed the vaccination technique to use against smallpox. He created inoculation against smallpox and took a big leap in the development of inoculation itself. He found that milk maids who had cow pox were less likely to get smallpox or be affected by it. It was believed that using vesicles from smallpox in the method of variolation would make people immune to the disease if they were healthy. His invention has saved more lives than any other person's invention throughout history.

My Connection

Area or Branch of Engineering

I see myself not as an inventor of an actual thing, but maybe as an inventor of a new way to accomplish things and do things in science and medical science. If I can better the way to protect people and children from the sicknesses of our world, I will be satisfied with my work as an inventor. I want to improve or help create new vaccines and treatments for people.

1. You could say that he worked in the branch of engineering known as bio molecular engineering because immunology is a subdivision of that branch and Jenner worked more in that field. He didn’t start doing so in his childhood, he was interested in other things then. Immunology is about studying how the immune system works and things related to it like immunity to certain diseases and viruses.

Mini Resume

He was born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire in England on May 17th, 1749. Both of his parents died by the time he was five years old. He liked to collect bird eggs and fossils and other things like that. Jenner wrote many poems during his life because he liked words and poetry. He played the flute and the violin. He went to St. George’s Hospital in London to complete his medical training. For his carrer he became an English country doctor.

Impact or Contribution to Society

3. Edward Jenner contributed to society by protecting them against the violence and destruction of smallpox. Without his work, many, many more people could have been affected by the disease. He potentially saved millions of people’s lives by developing vaccination and inoculation. The real inventor of vaccination is unknown, but they are believed to have lived a long time ago.
