Characterization

Piggy

Loss of Innocence

Psychology

Piggy is a fat boy that wears glasses. He is known to be the wise one that tries to speak up, but no one seems to listen.

Fear of the Unknown

Piggy's glasses are a symbol that represents him because he sees things the other boys dont see such as being intelligent. Once his glasses are broken he loses his clearity.

pg. 69 " We've killed the pig- we stole up on them-we got in a circle-"

pg.31 " They knew very well why he hadn't: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood."

pg.91 "What are we? Humans? Animals? Or savages? What's grownups going to think?"

pg.185 "They were savages it was true; but they were human, and ambushing fears of the deep night were coming on."

Allegory

Fear of the known means the fear of survival. Losing something that means the most to you such as: health, wealth, or authority.

pg.174 " Piggy peered anxiously into the luminous veil that hung between him and the world."

Religious Allegory

The most common emotions to occur when going through fear of the unknown is stress, anxiety, sadness, or scared.

In chapter 11, this quote represents the loss of innocence because a little boy was uncertain about his safety.

In a religious allegory you get a more understanding of the story between the characters and a symbolic meaning.

Throughout the story the little boys are going through Fear of the Unknown. They did not know if they would ever be rescued. The fear of survival, living on an island with a creature known as "beastie." The fear of not knowing what the beast really is. The fear of health, figuring out if they could catch a pig so that they could eat meat. Each boy went through different emotions that controlled the way they acted.

Kristian Moe, " Lord of the flies as a Religious Allegory" claims that Lord of the Flies is seen as a religious allegory by comparing Jesus and Simon. Moe mentions Simon is a prophet, Jesus won over death, just like Simon did when he faced the Beast, and came back alive. She also mentions they had both been killed in anger and in the belief that they were evil. In order to support her claim she compared Jesus and Simon in events. This essay was made for the audience thats reading Lord of the Flies to show that its a religious allegory.

Ch.2 " Now he says it was a beastie." "Beastie?" "A snake-thing. Ever so big. He saw it." (pg. 35)

In chapter 3, Simon was the only one willing to help the littluns build their shelter. Jesus would do the same thing to help if he had seen innocent little children struggling to build their shelter. (pg.54-55)

Throughout the story the boys represent Adam and Eve because the island is like the Garden of Eden. The boys tend to distrub the peace of the island.
