ICT health and safety legislation is in place to protect those who use ICT on a regular basis (for example office workers, data entry clerks etc..). Without such legislation the ICT working place would not be like it is today.
What do the employee and employer need to do?
Legislation states that an employer must:
provide tiltable screens
provide anti-glare screen filters
provide adjustable chairs
provide foot supports
make sure lighting is suitable
make sure workstations are not cramped
pay for appropriate eye and eyesight tests by an optician
An Employee must:
plan work at a computer so that there are frequent breaks
Make sure they do not take any food or drink near computers
Electrical equipment
The law aslo states the ICT equipment such as computers, keyboards and speakers etc should be safety checked periodcally to check for such things as harmful faults that could pose a risk to employees. There should also be no food or drink near computers as if water were to spill on to a computer then an employee would be at great risk of an electric shock.
There are many problems asscoiate with ICT in the workplace. An example of this is repetative strain injury in which your arms and fingers can become very painful due to the nature of the job (striking keys on a key board, clicking on a mouse etc..). For this reason the health and safety laws also states that employees should be entilted to regular breaks throughout the working day in order to let ther muscles rest.

When working with computers the law also states that any software provided by the employer must be easy to use as well free from bugs and glitches. This is important for employees as if it is there first time using the software they will find it easy to use and so therefore will not feel stressed from the complexity of it as stress leads to fatigue. The law states:
Employees should be trained to use software including training in new updates of the software.
The software should be bug-free meaning it causes minimal stress
The interface should be easy to use and understand
