When it began
Fortress of Mainz
- The war began when the French invaded the holy Roman Empire, taking Frankenthal, Worms, Oppenheim, an the fortress of Mainz.
- It was started by a series of Indian Massacres led by Frontenac, the Governor of Canada. The first of these was the destruction of Dover, New Hampshire, and a town of 50 villagers.

- The war of the league of Augsburg was a war between the Grand Alliance, England, Spain, and the Netherlands, to resist Louis X IV's, Sun King, invasion of Rhenish Palatinate on September 25, 1688
- The war of the League of Augsburg ended in 1697 when Louis XIV signed the treaty of Ryswick and giving up his invasion of Rhenish Palatinate.
- They were fighting because King Louis X IV's of France wanted complete control of Europe.

How it Ended
- The war ended in basically a stalemate.
- The Treaty of Ryswick was signed to end the war in 1697.
- Both sides in the end were deeply in debt after the war.
- The treaty of Ryswick granted all land conquered after 1679 back to Spain, Netherlands and England, but France got to keep Strasbourg.
- Only five years later in 1702 Philip of Anjon took the throne of Spain, and greatly increased Spain's power among the dynasties of Europe. The English did not like this. They declared war on Spain and France. The Spanish Succession then followed.
