Liam Carlson, Patrick Gordon, and Kayley Khan

A False Lull in Europe

The Vietnam Nightmare

  • West Germany was let into NATO in 1955
  • Eastern European countries and the Soviets signed the Warsaw Pact which created a red military counterweight on the NATO
  • They requested aid from the United States and when it was denied, they were slaughtered by Soviet Forces
  • In early 1950 North Vietnam was becoming progressively more communist, but Eisenhower decided not to intervene
  • Southern Vietnam was more inclined to Western policy, President Ho Chi Minh promised them an election then it never happened
  • Eisenhower agreed to send troops and weapons to support "Democracy"

A New Look In Foreign Policy

Eisenhower Republicanism at Home

  • John Foster Dulles proposed a plan to build up units in the army and navy that would be equipped with nuclear weapons (Strategic Air Command)
  • This plan would allow Eisenhower to threaten other countries with the US's superior weaponry
  • At the Geneva summit in 1955, Eisenhower attempted to make peace with the Soviet Union. Peace negotiations were rejected
  • Eisenhower was liberal in dealing with people, but conservative in government and economic policies
  • Intended to keep America from socialism and to balance the budget
  • Gave in to Mexican government's worries that illegal Mexican immigration would undo the Bracero Program, proceeded to deport 1,000,000 illegal immigrants
  • Passed the Interstate Highway Act of 1957
  • In 1959, he incurred the biggest peacetime deficit in U.S. history

Crisis at Little Rock

In September of 1957 the governor of Arkansas used the National Guard to prevent nine black students from entering a white school. Eisenhower was outraged by this and sent troops to escort the children to their classes.
