Nickel Plated Neodymium Supermagnet Cubes

Magnetic separation is a process in which magnetically susceptible material is extracted from a mixture using a magnetic force. This separation technique can be useful in mining iron as it is attracted to a magnet. A typical application of this is the High Intensity Magnetic Separator.in this device the current is passed through the coil, which creates a magnetic field, which magnetizes the expanded steel matrix ring. The matrix material being paramagnetic behaves like a magnet in the magnetic field and thereby attracts the fines. The ring is rinsed when it is in the magnetic field and all the non-magnetic particles are carried with the rinse water. Next as the ring leaves the magnetic zone the ring is flushed and a vacuum of about – 0.3 bars is applied to remove the magnetic particles attached to the matrix ring.

There are two types of Transformers we generally see:

  • The Step-up Tranformer which increases the ouput as it has a higher number of turns in the Secondary Windings with respect to the Primary Coil.
  • The Step-Down Transformer finds use where we have decrease output , and hence it's construct has more turns in the Primary coil than in the secondary.

DO MAGNETICS HAVE ANY FUN APPLICATION?

Electric guitars use Magnetic pickup technology(transducer), to use the vibrations of strings and amplify them

and convert them into electrical impulses(current).A pickup device is a transducer that captures mechanical vibrations, usually from suitably equipped stringed instruments such as the Electric Guitar, and converts them to an electrical signal that is amplified, recorded, or broadcast. It employs the principle of Electromagnetic Induction. A magnetic pickup consists of a permanent magnet with a core of material such as a ceramic, wrapped with a coil of several thousand turns of fine enameled copper wire. The pickup is most often mounted on the body of the instrument, but can be attached to the bridge, neck or pick guard. The permanent magnet magnetizes the steel strings above it and the steel strings when they vibrate become moving magnets thereby inducing an alternating current through the coil of wire. This signal is then carried to amplification or recording equipment via a cable. There may also be an internal preamplifier stage between the pickup and cable.

The TransRapid

The Transrapid is the German high-speed monorail train and the first operational Magnetic Levitation based Train. It's construction started in 1969, and its test facility was completed in 1987. The transrapid 09 is the currently active maglev monorail in Germany and has a cruising speed of 500kmph with accelaration ata whopping 1m/s2. It is a joint venture between Siemens and ThyssenKrupp. The Transrapid maglev system uses a synchronous longstator linear motor for both propulsion and braking. It works like a rotating electric motor whose stator is "unrolled" along the underside of the guideway, so that instead of producing a torque it produces a linear force along its length.

MagLev (Magnetic Levitation)

Maglev is a method of propulsion that uses magnetic levitation to propel vehicles with magnets rather than with wheels, axles and bearings. With maglev, a vehicle is levitated a short distance away from a guide way using magnets to create both lift and thrust. MagLev if adopted into travel can serve as a viable, efficient and eco-friendly method of transportation. Maglev trains operate more smoothly and quietely than conventional trains. Also as they will be free of friction and traction, they will be able to achieve speed and accelaration surpassing conventional trains, and will be free of weather conditions impacting their operations.

Supermagnets have high coercivity(resistance to demagnetization), high saturation magnetization and thus high energy density. These magnets are manufactured by either Sintering or Magnetic bonding of rare earth metals. They are then graded according to their Magnetic Energy Product( Magnetic Flux output per unit volume). Their existing applications are Ring magnets specially those in MRI machines, Hard-disk drives, Headphones and Loudspeakers, Magnetic Bearings etc.

SUPERMAGNET

A Neodymium permanant magnet, called The Supermagnet is the most-widely used rare-earth magnet, comprising an alloy of Neodymium, Iron and Boron. Developed in 1982 by General Motors , these are the strongest magnets commercially avaialable. They have already replaced other magnetic materials in applications such as Hard-disk drives and Magnetic fasteners.

What is a Magnet?

Magnet (Origin "Magnetis Lithos" or Magnetic stone) is a material or object that produces a magnetic field.

This magnetic field is invisible but is responsible for the most notable property of a magnet: a force that pulls on other ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, and attracts or repels other magnets.

STEP-UP TRANSFORMER

THE TWO TYPES

TRANSFORMERS

A transformer is an electrical device that transfers energy between two circuits through electromagnetic induction. Transformers may be used in voltage conversion to transform an AC voltage from one voltage level on the input of the device to another level at the output terminals, or simply provide a circuit isolation function. A transformers can provide control of specific requirements of current level as an alternating current source, or it may be used for impedance matching between mismatched electrical circuits to effect maximum power transfer between the circuits. A transformer most commonly consists of two windings of wire that are wound around a common core to provide tight electromagnetic coupling between the windings. The core material is often a laminated iron core. The coil that receives the electrical input energy is referred to as the primary winding, while the output coil is called the secondary winding. An alternating electric current flowing through the primary winding (coil) of a transformer generates an electromagnetic field in its surroundings and a varying magnetic flux in the core of the transformer. Through electromagnetic induction, this magnetic flux generates a varying electromotive force in the secondary winding, which induces a voltage across the output terminals. If a load impedance is connected across the secondary winding, a current flows through the secondary winding drawing power from the primary winding and its power source.
