Defining Moments in Canadian History

Billy Bishop
February 8th 1894- September 11th 1956
January 28, 1923- September 1939
- Billy Bishop was a Canadian air ace that came out of war with 72 victories,making him the top Canadian ace of World War One.
- This was a truly defyning and meaningful momment in Canadian history because of his remarkable victories and helped them to win the first world war, also making Bishop a recognized and famous Canadian.
- The SS Athenia was a passenger liner that was built in 1923 for Anchor-Donaldson line, and then later became the Donaldson Atlantic Line
- This is a defining moment because one day in 1939, a 10-year old innocent Canadian girl named Margaret Hayworth was riding the Athenia, a passenger liner was attacked by German submarines, and she died.
- This moment stood out to Canadians and provided them with courage to fight in the war to provide peace for the innocent people
- Nazi run "concentration camps" started operating in March 1933 in Germany as soon after Hitler's Nazi party was given control over the police.
- The camps were used to capture, torture, and kill jewish people, colored people or any one that was not Aryan race
- Concentration camps were a period in history that no one will ever forget, and it is defining because Canadians, and the rest of the world are happy and proud that our team won WW11, or else we would have no freedom
- We are also reminded everyday to spread love and end racism because of the Holocaust.

Dieppe
January 8th 1935-August 16th 1977
- In WW1, many woman were recruited into jobs who were usually done by men but were now in the war and couldn't work
- These jobs were usually making ammunition in factories, for the weapons at war, and because of the high demand for ammo this made the munitions factories the highest employer for woman in 1918.
- This time was hard for woman but felt a sense of pride for making ammunition for their husbands away at war, because of these people we would not have won the war and have the freedom we have today.
- The Dieppe raid later called "Operation Jubilee" was an allied war attack on the German forces in WW11.
- This was a defining moment for Canada, and everyone on our side to plan in code to prevent spies and traitors, also to have protection for the next battle since the Dieppe raid there was open land and nothing to hide behind.
- Dieppe was considered a lesson battle, as we then later won D-day and won WW11.
- Elvis Presley was a American singer in the 1950's. He was named one of the most significant icons in the 20th century, and often nicknamed "King of Rock and Roll".
- Elvis left the world with a new form of music-Pop. Without Elvis we would not have the upbeat, dancing music we have today making his music defining and legendary.

- The National Hockey League was founded November 17th, 1917 and "Hockey Night In Canada" has been a Canadian classic for more than 100 years. The game of Hockey involves two teams, a puck and a whole lot of perseverance.
- Hockey is our national sport, and we take pride in winning gold at the Olympics and when we win games in the NHL. Without Hockey, Canada would not be what it is today.
- Gavrillo Princep was a member of the terrorist group "The Black Hand"
- His group assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and his wife
- This resulted in the first world war
- This is a defining moment because without the first world war, we wouldn't be an independent nation or have the freedom and rights we have today. War was not good or ideal, but it is part of our history that will be past down for centuries to come.
- In Flanders Field was a poem written on May 3rd, 2015 by John Mcrae in WW1.
- This poem was written right after the lieutenant colonel's dear friend's funeral after the second battle of Ypres.
- This beautiful poem is world famous, read at many Remembrance Day assemblies, and cherished by many who were effected by the first war, this is defining because with all the violence, attacks, weapons, and gore we are able to look at the men's personal thoughts through poems and letters, which make you think about the gratitude we show for soldiers at war

June 7th 1906-May 7th 1915
- Japan was founded in 660 BC and paid a major contributor to the second World War. The allies in WW11 were now Japan, Italy, and Germany, and the Entente allies were Canada, U.SA, France, Russia, and Britain.
- Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, a surprise military attack on the U.S naval base in Hawaii. This lead the U.S into the second World War.
- This time was defining because without this attack we would not have the United States help to win the war and this shows and teaches a lesson to always be prepared for something to happen and have yourself ready for defense.
- Kristallnacht, or "The Night Of Broken Glass" took place on the 9th and 10th of November, 1938 in Germany.
- This was an attack ordered from Hitler, it was for the S.S to arrest Jewish men and bring them to concentration camps. Jewish hospitals, schools, stores, and homes were invaded and destroyed, leaving broken glass everywhere
- 7,000 Jewish business were destroyed and over 96 people died
- This event truly shows the horror of the Holocaust and the anti-semitism that was going on in this period, Kristallnacht is a perfect example of the craziness happening before the actual genocide of 12 million people.
- The Lusitania was a British ocean liner, and was briefly the largest passenger ship in the world.
- In 1915, she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat, killing 1,198 passengers and the crew.
- The sinking of the Lusitania helped Britain with a propaganda opportunity, which helped change the U.S.A's opinion on Germany, and helped them decide to join the War in 1917, helping us win the war.
Much Music
Nine Eleven
O'Canada
- Much Music is a Canadian Music video channel that also broadcasts T.V shows, Movies and more. The channel started in 1984 and was the next bug thing for teens in the 80's.
- Much was a defining moment for people everywhere because it defiantly changed the way music was portrayed, music videos were very popular at the time and people would spend hours a day watching them
- Without Much Music, we would not have Music Videos and the availability to listen to music as soon as we turned on the t.v.
- Nine eleven was series of terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001 on the New York Twin Towers (Trades Center) The attack was lead by the terrorist group al-Qaeda
- 3,000 People died that day, either on the planes, or in the buildings.
- Nine Eleven was defiantly a defining moment in history because of the extreme act of terrorism still existing in this world, this day was a day to remember because of the catastrophic incident and impacts young adults because of how close the date is from today, people of all generations will remember this day for years
- "O'Canada is Canada's national anthem that was first composed by Calixa Lavalee on June 24 1880.
- This anthem is very important to Canadian heritage because it represents Canada's freedom and independence and lets people know that we are now an independent nation and our own strong and free country

Rwanda Genocide
- The battle of Passchendale lasted for 3 months and 6 days in Passendale, Belgium in WW1.
- There were between 200,000 and 400,000 causalities
- This is defining moment for Canada especially because through this muddy massacre, Canadians showed their strength, bravery, courage and loyalty and showed the other countries they could be their own independent nation and fight for their rights
- The 1995 Quebec referendum was a vote on whether Quebec should stay apart of Canada or not
- Quebec has wanted to be an independent nation for along time, and The Referendum was an significant time for Canada because it represented Quebec's loyalty to Canada
- The Rwanda genocide took place in Rwanda, it was a mass genocide of the Tutsi population by the Hutu.
- The genocide killed about 1,000,000 people
- This is a defining moment in history because it reminds us of the overruling and how power can make people crazy and can result in the mass murder or "Rwanda Genocide".

- The Wall Street Crash of 1929 was the start of the Great Depression that lasted 10 years, the market fell in New York on October 29th
- This event shaped the rest of history because of the long-term effects of the decade long depression that lead families into poverty and unemployment
- The V2 Rockets used in WW11 were used by Nazi Germany in the war, and over 3,000 rockets were ready for launch in 1944
- These rockets were a significant in history because they were a new technological advantage at this time, These weapons were new and never before used and helped Nazi Germany advance in the war
- The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties signed at the end of WW1
- This single document was the reason for WW11 that lasted 6 years and is defining because of how the rules people make sometimes people do not agree with and can result in the second world war

Zyklon B gas
- Both world wars contributed greatly to the history of Canada and the rest of the world, resulted in our freedom, Canada as an independent nation and helped us free people such as genocides, etc.
- Zyklon B gas was invented by Germans in the 1920's, it is a cyanide based pesticide designed to kill Jewish people in the Holocaust
- This invention defines the entire Jewish genocide because without it they would have not killed all non Aryan people in the 1940's, and would not have been apart of the mass murder of 12 million people.
