A- Acknowledge: This is simply acknowledging the patient and/or
their family by name. This lets the patient/family know that you
care about them.
I-Introduce: Letting the patient and family know who you are. This
involves you verbally introducing yourself and explaining who you
are and what you do, as well as writing your name on the whiteboard
in the patient room.
AIDET stands for:
D-Duration: Explaining to the patient how long before the procedure, how
long the procedure will take, how long until the patient goes home, how long it will take to receive the results.
E-Explanation: Explaining step by step what will happen, answering all questions posed by patient/family. It is imperative to do this in a manner
the patient can understand clearly.
T-Thank You: Thank the patient for choosing your hospital and for their
cooperation!
AIDET is a communication framework that is designed to improve
the patient's perception of care.
AIDET aims to help reduce patient anxiety and improve clinical
outcomes as a result.
A- "Hello Mr. Smith, how are you today?" It is important to maintain eye contact and smile.
I- "My name is Lauren and I am your nurse today. I have been a nurse for 8 years and have spent my entire career here. I am proud to be apart of a very experienced care team that will make sure this procedure goes as planned."
D- "This procedure will take about 1 hour to perform and 2 hours for the results to come back"
E- "Let me explain more about an MRI and why it is important for you to have one. " (This is where you would explain in full about an MRI)
T- "Mrs. Jones, thank you for choosing St. Joseph and trusting us with your care. Are there any more questions you have before being discharged?"
