Joey, in 10 things, plays a self-centered boy who only wants Bianca for the challenge of getting her and isn't truly in love with her. While Horsentio plays an honest, kind character who actually wants to get closer to Bianca because he really likes her.
In this comparison, both Kat and Katherine are abusive. In 10 things, Kat is verbally abusive and cruel towards others and uses her voice to get her way, while Katherine is more physically abusive than verbally and punches and hits people when she wants something.
The plots in the movie and the play have different views on woman and feminism. In taming of the shrew, the play is sexist as it looks down towards woman and how they should obey their men. While in the movie, women (particularly Kat) have power and are allowed to be opinionated and 'disobey' their men.
Joey would always talk about how good looking he was, and how he was a model. He had a very large ego and was not afraid to talk about himself and toot his own horn.
In 10 things there are many examples of Kat using her voice to act shrewish, for one example she would always have rude comments and strong remarks back to Joey when they sat next to eachother in English class.
So Will I, Signior Gremio; but a word, I pray. Though
the nature of our quarrel yet never brook'd parle, know now, upon
advice, it toucheth us both- that we may yet again have access to our fair mistress, and be happy rivals in Bianca's love- to labour and effect one thing specially.
KATHERINE
You lying brat. It’s Hortensio, isn’t it?
BIANCA
If you want him, dear sister, he’s yours. I swear I’ll woo him for you myself.
KATHERINE
Oh, I see. You’re more interested in money. You’ll live in luxury with Gremio.
BIANCA
Is it because of him that you envy me? You must be kidding! And now I see that you’ve been joking all the while. Please, Kate, untie my hands.
KATHERINE strikes her
Kat always had a chance to stand her ground and have her own opinion on things. This mostly occurred in conversations with her father, and with her teacher during class.
To make her come and know her keeper's call
That is, to watch her, as we watch these kites
That bate and beat and will not be obeidient.
She ate no meat today, nor none shall eat.
Last night she slept not, nor tonight she shall not.
This difference is significant as it completely changes the roles between Kat And Katherine, and the way each character is portrayed. Although they are both viewed as 'shrews', Kat is an opinionated woman who isn't afraid to say what she thinks or feels, while Katherine is someone who's voice isn't taken seriously, so she has to be physically abusive towards other people for them to notice her.
This difference is significant in respect to how the piece is interpreted as this adds a modern factor to the movie. Horsentio is not a character that many people can relate to in this setting, unlike the change in his character development into Joey that is more of the 'high school jerk' that the viewer can relate to and understand. The quote is about Horsentio planning on having a happy rivalry to win Bianca's love, unlike Joey who wants Bianca for different reasons.
In this quote, Petruchio is stating how he plans to tame Katherine: she will not eat or sleep. He treats Katherine like an animal in order to tame her and have her under control. Although Kat was never treated this poorly, she always said what she wanted to say and did what she wanted to do. Today, it isn't socially acceptable to treat women the way Petruchio treated Kat in the play, which is why in the modern movie we didn't see Pat act like this.
Lucentio is a very confident man with high self-esteem and is bold about his love for Bianca. In 10 things, Cameron also falls in love with Bianca, although he is hesitant and doubtful about his chances with her.
At the end of both works Kat and Katherine perform speeches to their men in front of large crowds and their men. The significant difference between the two is that in Taming of the Shrew, Katherine's speech reveals that she has been defeated and how she is now obedient and tamed. While Kat's speech (poem) is her acceptance of Pat's dishonesty and forgives him, as she declares her love for him.
Cameron was very nervous when talking to Bianca when they first met, and was never sure and fully confident about getting her when he would talk about her with Micheal.
O Tranio, till I found it to be true,
I never thought it possible or likely.
But see, while idly I stood looking on,
I found the effect of love in idleness
And now in plainness do confess to thee
That art to me as secret and as dear
As Anna to the Queen of Carthage was,
Tranio, I burn, I pine, I perish, Tranio,
If I achieve not this young modest girl.
Counsel me, Tranio, for I know thou canst.
Assist me, Tranio, for I know thou wilt.
I hate the way you talk to me,
and the way you cut your hair.
I hate the way you drive my car,
I hate it when you stare.
I hate your big dumb combat boots
and the way you read my mind.
I hate you so much it makes me sick,
it even makes me rhyme.
I hate the way you’re always right,
I hate it when you lie.
I hate it when you make me laugh,
even worse when you make me cry.
I hate it when you’re not around,
and the fact that you didn’t call.
But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you,
not even close…
not even a little bit…
not even at all.
Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,
Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee,
And for thy maintenance commits his body
To painful labour both by sea and land,
To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,
Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe,
And craves no other tribute at thy hands
But love, fair looks, and true obedience,
Too little payment for so great a debt.
. . .
My mind hath been as big as one of yours,
My heart as great, my reason haply more,
To bandy word for word and frown for frown;
But now I see our lances are but straws,
Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare,
That seeming to be most which we indeed least are.
Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,
And place your hands below your husband’s foot,
In token of which duty, if he please,
My hand is ready, may it do him ease.
Here, Lucentio is very bold about his love for Bianca as he is declaring how badly he wants her to Triano, and is very confident about getting her. This is important as it changes the way we look at the relationship between them.
As seen in the differences of these quotes, Katherine's speech indicates how her views have been changed, and that she has officially become obedient to her husband. While in Kat's poem, her views on men and boys haven't been changed, she has just stated that she forgives Patrick for everything he has done wrong.
Patrick and Kat really loved and fell for each other in 10 things. Although in the play, Kat and Petrchio never really truly loved each other, their entire relationship was strictly based on the money that Bapista was giving Petruchio.
In Taming of the Shrew, Baptista wants Katherine to wed and get rid of her like she is an object. While Walter, in 10 things, has a different mind set towards Kat: he doesn't necessarily want her to have a boyfriend, Kat just has to have one before Bianca does.
Altough Lucentio and Cameron are both teachers to their versions of Bianca, Lucentio taught Bianca Latin as Cameron taught Bianca French.
Patrick and Kat really fell for each other, you could see this when they began to laugh with eachother and really start to like eachother. I beleive this was most shown when she snuck Patrick out of class and then took a boat to go paintballing.
"as I told you before I am
Lucentio son unto Vincentio of Pisa,
diguised thus to get your love
and that "Lucentio" that comes a-wooing,
is my man Tranio.bearing my port,
that we might beguile the old pantaloon."
Cameron's friend Micheal mentions to him that Bianca needs a french tutor, altough Cameron doesn't know how to speak French he was willing to teach her.
In 10 things, Kat and Biancas father clearly stated that Bianca was not allowed to do things unless her older sister Kat had already done them or is doing them with her. This also included that Bianca was not allowed to have a boyfriend unless Kat had one aswell.
"Gentlemen, importune me no farther,
For how I firmly am resolved you know:
That is, not to bestow my youngest daughter
Before I have a husband for the elder.
If either of you both love Katherine
Because I know you well and love you well,
Leave shall you have to court her at your pleasure."
Thus in plain terms: your father hath consented
That you shall be my wife, your dowry ‘greed on,
And will you, nill you, I will marry you.
Now Kate, I am a husband for your turn,
For by this light, whereby I see thy beauty—
Thy beauty that doth make me like thee well—
Thou must be married to no man but me,
For I am he am born to tame you, Kate,
And bring you from a wild Kate to a Kate
Conformable as other household Kates.
Here comes your father. Never make denial.
I must and will have Katherine to my wife.
As you can see in these examples, it is shown that both Lucentio and Cameron teach Bianca a language. The significant difference here is that Lucentio teaches Bianca Latin, a more romantic language. In this quote, Lucentio is using his ability to speak Latin to his advantage by saying romantic things to Bianca. While in the movie, Cameron wasn't very educated in French and wasn't able to use it to his advantage like Lucentio does.
This difference is significant as it shows the different views the fathers have on their daughters, which can completely alter the way the reader or viewer sees the characters.
In this quote, Petruchio states that he is only marrying her because her father has given him money. In no way did Petruchio and Katherine really love or want to be with each other unlike Pat and Kat. This shows how much stronger Pat and Kat's relationship and bond was compared to Petruchio and Katherine's. Pat and Kat's love was real.
Patrick and Petruchio are both viewed as the ones to 'tame the shrew'. Patrick's character is seen as Kat's equal or peer, while Petruchio is more of Katherine's master, and the more dominant person as Katherine must obey his orders.
In the play, Lucentio and Triano trade places in order for Lucentio to win Bianca's love. While in 10 things, Cameron and Micheal don't switch places, they work together and Micheal acts as his 'wingman' so that Cameron can be with Bianca.
Kat always had the ability to say no to Patrick, she was never forced to do anything she didn't want to do. An example of this is when Patrick asked her to prom, she said no. He didn't force her to do anything.
In the movie, Micheal helps Cameron get closer to Bianca and comes up with the plan for him to get her.
Basta, content thee, for I have it full.
We have not yet been seen in any house,
Nor can we be distinguished by our faces
For man or master. Then it follows thus:
Thou shalt be master, Tranio, in my stead,
Keep house and port and servants as I should.
I will some other be, some Florentine,
Some Neapolitan, or meaner man of Pisa.
'Ti hatched, and shall be so. Tranio, at once
Uncase thee. Take my colored hat and cloak
KATHARINA
The moon! the sun: it is not moonlight now.
PETRUCHIO
I say it is the moon that shines so bright.
KATHARINA
I know it is the sun that shines so bright.
PETRUCHIO
Now, by my mother's son, and that's myself,
It shall be moon, or star, or what I list,
Or ere I journey to your father's house.
Go on, and fetch our horses back again.
Evermore cross'd and cross'd; nothing but cross'd!
Although in both pieces Micheal/Triano help Cameron/Lucentio get Bianca, in the movie they do not go as far as switching places with each other. This is significant because it shows the change in humor, this was once funny in Shakespearean times but wouldn't necessarily be considered that funny in modern times. This also shows that Lucentio and Triano have a closer relationship with each other as they are willing to go further to help each other.
Petruchio told Katherine that she has to agree with him no matter what, even if it is something as silly as saying that the sun is the moon. This quote shows how Katharine must obey Petruchio, while on the other hand Kat has the ability to say no to Patrick and doesn't have to agree with everything he says. This is important as it shows the levels of social hierarchy each of them were on. Petruchio was much higher than Katherine as he had much more power than her, but Pat was almost equal to Kat as neither of them had total control over each other. Pat and Kat's relationship is much more acceptable in society today.
