This presentation will show some information about Giovanni Bellini's life and go into great detail about one of his most famous paintings, "Agony in the Garden." After explaining the painting, the presentation will show some ideas on what may have influenced Bellini to paint "Agony in the Garden" and what message he may have intended to tell the reader through this painting.
Giovanni Bellini was most likely born in Venice, Italy in 1430. Jacopo, his father, tutored him in painting. He started his career by working in his father's workshop. One of the pupils by the name of Andrea Mantegna had a great influence on Bellini's work.
Bellini started to use oil paints around the 1870s. His artwork contained Biblical events. He continuously painted until he died at the age of 90 in 1516.
The major religious symbol in "Agony in the Garden" allows the viewer to make a safe assumption that the painting was created in the 1400s. The man praying to the angel happens to be the religious symbol.
Churches were very powerful during the 1400s. People would often go to these churches for protection, which is comparable to the man praying to the angel. Another thing to consider is that religious art pieces were in high demand in Italy. Since Bellini was an Italian artist, it should come across as no surprise that his artwork contained religious symbols.
The distant soldiers should also be noted. Although it is unclear what they are doing, many people believe that they are taking Jesus Christ to his location of execution.
The first thing in "Agony in the Garden" that the viewer will notice will most likely be the four nearby men. Three out of the four men have their eyes closed, which could mean that they are either asleep or dead. One of the nearby men appears to be praying. Taking note of the angel in the background, it is safe for the viewer to assume that the man is praying to the angel. Although it is difficult to identify what the distant soldiers are doing, they could possibly be taking somebody to a certain place to be executed. Overall, this painting is supposed to be depressing and ominous. The sunset in the background is one of the things that makes this painting very famous. Looking closely, the viewer can see that Bellini added light effects into the painting, which is what set Bellini apart from most other artists of his time period. Most of the painting consists of shades of brown. Although most of the painting is realistic, the angel in the background is abstract.
