- The Screaming Eagles was created when the 506th parachute infantry was attached to the division.
- The 101st Air Assault Division (101st Airborne and/or The "Screaming Eagles") is an elite specialized infantry division in the United States Army.
- They are able to plan, coordinate, and execute brigade-size air assaults.
- highly trained group
- Covers extensive distances and engages the enemy behind their lines
- Began on August 16th, 1942 at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana.
- Has no history, but has had a "rendezvous with history" and in doing so, has kept it's proud history.
- Moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and during their training, successfully demonstrated the readiness that was needed.
- On June 6th, 1944, (D-Day) they became the first Americans to set foot in occupied France
- Not far behind, the Screaming Eagles parachuted into Normandy.
- Major General William C. Lee, first Commanding General, described the new division as being called into action, often when the need was “immediate and extreme.”
- In 1965, the Division was deployed to Vietnam:
the 1st Brigade and support troops were sent into action first, the rest of the division followed soon after
- Elements of the 101st participated in as many as 15 campaigns during the seven years of combat in Vietnam
- In 1968, the 101st acquired the structure and equipment of an Airmobile Division
- The Division now had access to helicopters to transport troops and supplies, making the 101st an obvious choice for the Vietnam Conflict
- The dense Vietnam jungles made the use of helicopters a coveted advantage because of the maneuverability helicopters offer, allowing the 101st to accomplish more missions than any other unit
- Fought in both the Tet Offensive and the Tet Counteroffensive
- As part of the Tet Counteroffensive, the 101st embarked on an offensive operation against fortified North Vietnamese troops on Hill 932; the hill became known as “Hamberger Hill’
- The intense amounts of fire power that was used stripped the hill of its vegetation, but even through all this fighting, they could not remove the entrenched North Vietnamese soldiers
- Soldiers from the Division continued to attack these positions, often under heavy machine gun fire; after 10 days of fighting, the Vietnamese soldiers retreated, leaving the Americans to claim the hill
- The Screaming Eagles left Vietnam in 1972, they were the last combat division to leave
- The 101st were afflicted with twice as many casualties in Vietnam as it did in World War ll, but established itself as a fighting force to be reckoned with
- 17 101st soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor
- Jimi Hendrix, one of the greatest guitarist, served in the 101st Airborne Division.
- In September, 1957, President Eisenhower sent some of the troops from the 101st to safeguard the Little Rock Nine. This was an African-American group trying to attend classes at Little Rock Central Highschool.

-Hundreds of thousands of men sacrificed everything for people who disrespected them and hated them
-Coming home to an uncaring country, lacking the necessary support needed after experiencing as much as a soldier would left many psychological scars that many still struggle with to this day
