  • The Red Scare first began with the Bolshevik Russian Revolution of 1917 .
  • a nation-wide anti-radical hysteria provoked by a mounting fear that the Bolshevik Revolution was to be unstopped.
  • that fear changed churches, homes, marriages, civilities, and the American way of Life. ( people in America before this happened were not as anxious; they lived with little fear some lived with none whats so ever, before this America never really faced a major panic)
  • Politicians named this fear xenophobia.
  • American people lived in fear of being accused of communist their normal ways of life were to be changed because they did not want anyone thinking they were communist or plotting something against America or the people.
  • Americans turned against each other. Many people at the time had their suspicions if the government was to be trusted.
  • Government officials were on the eye of the public now more than ever causing chaos in the country.
  • Many people went on riots they were scared of what was going to happen next and this was their way of dealing with it.

What is Fear?

Americas similar response to fear

  • In the Red Scare as in Guantanamo Bay people face fear.
  • In Guantanamo Bay the fear is, fear of being tortured and fear of not having the rights to defend yourself.
  • In Guantanamo Bay the prisoners usually came from terrorist camps that were being formed and since the government is so scared of that spreading they made this camp which takes away their rights and makes them live in a day life of fear and torments.
  • As of today the president does not want Guantanamo Bay to be opened and in use but Congress apposes so this camp will be kept open.
  • Sexual assault and humiliation is used in Guantanamo Bay for example making the prisoners line up naked in front of the female guards at the prison.
  • Many prisoners went on strike for a better place to live but the did it with their heads covered like showed in the image above, because they were scared of the consequences they faced if their identity is showed.
  • The camp could be considered outside U.S. legal jurisdiction meaning that the US should have no control over this camp.
  • The Geneva Convention rights do not apply to these citizens as stated by the United State government.
  • When prisoners report abuse the Bush government denied it.

As stated by John F. Kennedy fear is "A nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people." This definition of fear might not apply to everyone but it is a broad scope of what many people consider fear to be. During the Red Scare and in the current situation of Guantanamo Bay the people experience a lack of freedom to express themselves as they wish; people are scared of the consequences they may face, being physical or having to use technological uses like in the Red Scare. The Red Scare involved social agitation that aggravated national, social, and political tensions. All of those examples were produced by the mountainous amount of fear that the public had. While Guantanamo Bay deals with people being detained and terrorized in harmful ways. The camp also violates the rights of the individuals, like the Geneva Convention rights. To explain fear authors wrote stories for example The Crucible, which takes place during the Salem witch trials when fear was the only thing that lead a society. After all the Red Scare and Guantanamo Bay are not that different from each other they both deal with the peoples rights being violated leading to only mass hysteria in the American society; and being terrorized by the government, which then defined the actions of the American public that were taken place at the time.

As stated in this video this is the fear that people actually suffer today.

How does it tie in...

The Red Scare started a trend of fear through American. No one knew who was who, or what someone was doing at the time. The paranoia that communist movements might of been spreading through America during this time was major. Many people went on strikes leading to casualties in the streets because they did not know who to trust! The people did not know who was a communist and who was not. People changed their ways of living because if they acted differently then they might be accused of communism. As stated by Edward R. Murrow, "No one man can terrorize a whole nation unless we are all his accomplices." He basically states that the American people and government were being manipulated through communism that's why this fear started.

How does it tie in...

Types of Tortures

  • Sexual assault and humiliation is used in Guantanamo Bay for example making the prisoners line up naked in front of the female guards at the prison.

In conclusion, to tie all these facts together Guantanamo Bay should be closed down it dose not do anything to help America or its government it only creates fear and chaos between the people. As Mr. Obama said, "I think it is critical for us to understand that Guantanamo is not necessary to keep America safe. It is expensive. It is inefficient. It hurts us in terms of our international standing. It lessens cooperation with our allies on counter terrorism efforts. It is a recruitment tool for extremists. It needs to be closed" ( as cited in Christiane Amanpour). He sates that it is an unnecessary and costly thing to have plus the fear that it creates in its prisoners is enormous and is basically not needed. The use of torture in the people is horrible. When the public takes on strikes they are shut down by the government. But if the government does nothing to stop this then the strikes and riots will continue to go on and grow.

  • Sexual assault and humiliation is used in Guantanamo Bay for example making the prisoners line up naked in front of the female guards at the prison.
  • Sexual Humiliation is used to create the feeling of fear in the prison.
  • Another technique that the guards use on the prisoners is sleep deprivation.
  • Lack of sleep reduces psychological resistance and the resistance to pain.
  • Sleep Deprivation can cause decreased short term memory, speech impairment, hallucinations, psychosis, lowered immunity, headaches and these are just few things that happen.
  • The guards also use sensory deprive techniques on their prisoners this is is used to instil a sense of fear, disorientation and cause dependency on their captor.
  • Many more techniques were used against the prisoners to make them insignificant and create fear in the prison making the guards and a high sense of power.
