Historical backdrop

Historical backdrop

• Examples of early children’s books include:

1. The History of Little John Merry. Philadelphia: American Sunday-School Union, circa 1830.

2. A Book for Young Children. Philadelphia: American Sunday-School Union, circa 1845.

3. Stories for Little Girls: an amusing book for the moral improvement of children. Guben [Germany]: Printed by F. Fechner, circa 1840.

• Prior to 1850, children’s books centered on religious and moral values. This is in part due to two reasons:

1. Folk and Fairy tales challenge moral values (Stories: Before 1850, 2010).

2. “High infant mortality rate and large numbers of women dying in childbirth, also contributed to the focus in children's stories on pious lives and early deaths” (Stories: Before 1850, 2010).

Dutton's History

The History Of Little John Merry (a, b, c)

• Dutton Books retained its name through several company takeovers and in 1985 it was purchased by its current owner, Penguin Group (Dutton Marks 150, 2014).

o Once again, the company changed as Penguin Group created two divisions within Dutton, Children’s Book and Adult Books.

• After 1850 became known as the Golden Age of Children’s Literature.

o Advances in printing, due to the industrial revolution, led to the widespread publishing of color children’s books (Stories: After 1850, 2010).

o The Golden Age of Children’s Literature marked the “first time it was possible for authors to make a living out of writing solely for children, and to become famous for it” (Grenby, n.d.).

Dutton Children's Books

• The “crossover” of authors famous for their novels targeting the adult population to the role of a juvenile author is not a new concept, beginning in Denmark over a decade ago. (Beckett, 2009)

After World War I, the world of children’s literature began to change dramatically.

  • The revamping of the education system brought a window of opportunity for authors to target specific age ranges and stages of learning.

  • Along with that, books began to morph into more defined categories, such as books that were meant for children and those that were meant for children and adults. (Children’s Literature, 2016)

Dutton Children's Books

• “New age” author’s, such as award winning author John Green, have graced Dutton’s publishing list adding depth and innovation.

Pooh Postcard Spelling

“Now then, Pooh," said Christopher Robin, "where's your boat?"

"I ought to say," explained Pooh as they walked down to the shore of the island, "that it isn't just an ordinary sort of boat. Sometimes it's a Boat, and sometimes it's more of an Accident. It all depends."

"Depends on what?"

"On whether I'm on the top of it or underneath it.”

A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

"My spelling is Wobbly. It's good spelling but it wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.”

A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Shepard, E.

In Conclusion

• Is Dutton worth studying or researching?

In Conclusion

After celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2014, it is self-evident that Dutton’s Publishing Company still has a legacy to fulfill to this day.

The company’s mission is to continue to publish high-quality books that will transition young readers to strong readers throughout life.

Dutton Children's Books

“Milne did not write these stories for children; rather, he intended them for the child within us all.” ( Livinston, 2003)

With these changes, Dutton began to publish works, like Winnie the Pooh, that connected with the “toy” genre, blending fantasy with reality.

o Dutton publishes, on average, about forty books a year and many of the books go on to become best sellers. In 2013, almost half the books published became New York Times best sellers (Dutton Marks 150, 2014).

Dutton's History

• A new era in Dutton books started in 1923 when John Macrae became president after the passing of Edward Dutton.

o Macrae expanded the company’s types of publication and in particular their children books. He was able to secure the rights to publish what become one of the most recognizable children’s books, the Winnie the Pooh series by A.A. Milne (E.P. Dutton, n.d.).

Winnie-The-Pooh first edition

• Dutton, originally named E.P. Dutton, was founded by Edward Payson Dutton and Lemuel Ide in Boston in 1852 (E.P. Dutton, n.d.).

o By 1864 Dutton had bought out his partner and became a publishing company upon the purchase of Ticknor and Fields Bookstore (Dutton Marks 150, 2014).
