Canada is now a country

July 1st 1867

London, England Conference (December 1866)

  • British North America Act attended approving the Union

  • Union was also officially approved by Queen Victoria

  • Lady Howland was presented to Queen Victoria

  • William was one of 13 delegates to attend

Quebec Conference (October 1864)

William Pearce Howland attended

First Prime Minister: Sir John A McDonald

  • John A. Macdonald of Upper Canada (Ontario) wanted a legislative union (all important decisions should be made by a single and central government)

  • The Maritime delegates agreed with centralization

  • Lower Canada (Quebec) insisted on control over language, religion and civil law

  • A compromise was made - a federal system, in which each province would have its own legislature, and powers were divided between the federal and provincial governments

Charlottetown Conference (September 1864)

  • Originally were going to discuss Maritime Union
  • Upper and Lower Canada asked to attend the meeting
