Religion

  • 71% of Ghanians are Christian
  • 17% Muslim (mostly in the North of the country)
  • Most Asante are Christian now
  • Traditional religion rooted in the supernatural; witches, ghosts, spirits, monsters, etc.
  • Like with most West African religions, ancestors very important
  • Asante kingdom fought against British Rule for one hundred years before becoming part of the empire in 1896
  • Successful military campaign against the colonizers in 1874.
  • Rose against the British in 1901
  • leader was Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the queen mother of the town of Ejisu
  • exiled to Seychelles
  • Gained independence on March 6, 1957

Festivals

  • Akwasidae Festival celebrated every six weeks to celebrate unity within the kingdom and honor ancestral ties.
  • Adae Kese Festival is an annual event held on the 9th Akwasidae of every year. Commemorates ancestors, much libation and consecration ensues.
  • Climax of festival when the Ashantehene is carried in on a palanquin and paid homage to through dancing and drumming
