Religion
- 71% of Ghanians are Christian
- 17% Muslim (mostly in the North of the country)
- Most Asante are Christian now
- Traditional religion rooted in the supernatural; witches, ghosts, spirits, monsters, etc.
- Like with most West African religions, ancestors very important
- Asante kingdom fought against British Rule for one hundred years before becoming part of the empire in 1896
- Successful military campaign against the colonizers in 1874.
- Rose against the British in 1901
- leader was Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the queen mother of the town of Ejisu
- exiled to Seychelles
- Gained independence on March 6, 1957

- Visual representation of a person's status, history, personality, etc.
- Worn at very important events like festivals or holidays
- Over 300 different designs and a plethora of symbols
Festivals
- Akwasidae Festival celebrated every six weeks to celebrate unity within the kingdom and honor ancestral ties.
- Adae Kese Festival is an annual event held on the 9th Akwasidae of every year. Commemorates ancestors, much libation and consecration ensues.
- Climax of festival when the Ashantehene is carried in on a palanquin and paid homage to through dancing and drumming
