Summary of the flood

Stop seven: Zhaagawaamikaang

Modern day Chequamegon

The Creator flooded the Earth in the Great flood because Ojibwe could not live together in peace. Only Naanabozo and a handful of animals survived. In turn they all tried to dive to grab some earth to make a new land to live on. All failed. Then a tiny voice spoke up. It was a equally tiny muskrat. They all made fun of him. But then he dived and stayed under longer than all of them. They thought for sure he had drowned. But then he popped to the surface barely breathing. As Naanabozo held him he died. They thought his sacrifice was in vain, but then they noticed the little ball of earth he held. They started to celebrate the muskrat's sacrifice. Then the turtle swam up. He said "I will carry the weight of the Earth on my back." So Naanabozo placed the ball of earth on the turtle's back and and called upon the Four Winds. The earth grew until it was an island. The others stepped on and it kept growing. It is now known as North America.
