Did Jonas and Gabe Die at the end of The Giver?

Yes!

There is no way that Jonas survived at the end of the story. He was obviously hallucinating.

As Jonas was sliding down the hill, he saw lights and trees in the houses where the families were probably celebrating Christmas. Some people think that this is proof that he didn't die, but it's not. At that point he was probably getting very close to dying.

Jonas also heard music. I believe that this was angels or some other being singing as he and Gabe passed on and went to the afterlife.

As you have seen, it's highly unlikely that Jonas and Gabe survived. However, I think that the most convincing argument is the red sled that was at the top of the hill. There's no explanation for how that could even be there. The same sled that Jonas had seen from a memory centuries and centuries back? I don't think so.

In conclusion, it's clear that Jonas and Gabriel didn't make it. While this is a sad way to end the book, I think that it makes the most sense and it completes the story well.

1. Why did Jonas say that the music was "only an echo"?

2.Why does it say that they were "waiting for the baby"?!

3. Explain to me how the red sled ended up on that hill.
