How Does Social Media Affect the Mental Health and Self-Esteem of Youth Today?
Anumol Joshy
Lilanie Montoya
Here is more information over the negative mental effects that can be caused by social media.
The Fifth Commandment: "You shall not kill"
The Beatitudes
"Blessed are the Poor in Spirit; for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven"
To be poor in spirit its means to place God before anything else. To be poor in spirit, you get rid of qualities like ignorance and pride and you don't care about what anyone thinks of you because you remember that God is your support. This will bring you eternal happy because you are in the complete presence of God. In relation to our social justice issue, when the effects of social media begin to weigh us down, we have to remember that God is always with us and that we shouldn't fret about what others think in situations where our self esteem is low and we feel like we can't take it anymore
in relation to our social issue
The fifth Commandment applies to the killing of one's self spirit and self esteem in relation to our social issue. Social medias, without intention, cause the killing (lowering) of self esteem and mental health of others, more specifically the youth today. As we have learned so far from the information gathered in our presentation, we can also say this issue can also end a person's life if severe enough. Suicide may occur in those who may have depression or any of the other effects given as an example of what may occur in the use of social media. If you know you are struggling with one of these effects, talk to someone you trust before its too late.

Good Morning class, I'm Lilanie and I'm Anumol and today we will be talking to you guys about the issue of how social medias bring pressures to the youth today affecting their mental stability and self- esteem. We hope you enjoy and learn something new from our presentation. Let's get started.
How can Social Media Negatively Affect Youth:
Effects Social Media can Create on Youth:
How Youth are Affected by Social Media:
Since we live in the age of technology and the Internet, naturally we are surrounded by all sorts of medias, especially those of social media sites due to the easy access given on our phones and other types of technology. In fact, the average teen uses the Internet for approximately 9 hours a day.
As a youth today, I know personally how most of us love using social medias; from posting Instagram pictures, tweeting about how much you dislike homework to using Snapchat to send ugly pictures to your best friend or using Facebook to contact your relatives who live across the world, little do you know, all of this may have created an impact on your own self esteem and mental health with you knowing it.
-peer pressure
-cyberbullying
-online harassment
-social media depression
Today’s youth spends a lot time on social media which causes them to have less sleep and distractions from their school work giving them poor grades. There are also fake accounts on social media were people use it to bully others or to threaten someone.
Reasons why social media can negatively effect our brain:
It can...
-lower self esteem when we view other people's images and lifestyles who we begin to envy, wishing your life was like someone else or you looked like them
-the idea of fitting in to the social norm may cause mental stress and cause you to try and change how you look and act
-the feeling that it is a priority to share whatever you are doing online
Young people today have began to misuse social media by cyberbullying and online harassment etc; this has lead to many things such as depression and suicidal thoughts. Youth have forgotten priorities like family and instead they have chosen social media. Social media have influenced the youth to portray themselves to be someone they're not. There is no authenticity for the information coming in social media. Young people cannot concentrate on their studies because they are distracted by the social media.
This may lead to...
Social Anxiety
Lower Self Esteem

What is Self Esteem?
How can Social Media cause Anxiety for Youth?
When using social medias we may begin an addiction of constantly checking them. You begin to view the different lifestyles and looks of others who you begin to envy for and start to believe we are less than they are for various reasons.
How can Social Media cause a Decrease in Self Esteem for Youth?
Self esteem is how much we value our abilities and ourselves as a whole
a fear of social situations that causes the feeling of intense nervousness and self-consciousness from being closely watched, judged, and criticized by others
Being on social media is like building a wall in front of yourself or hiding behind a screen without actually interacting in face to face situations. On social media, cyberbullying can occur which can already cause stress to the human brain and create a fear of ever seeing this person in person if in public. Being on social media can also create a social awkwardness that can occur in situations where one begins to isolate themselves from the real world and get caught up in the cyber world. Anxiety in posting online can occur because of the sudden urge to fit into the social norm but also becoming self conscious of being judged and criticized by other.
