Saturn

Saturn: Eleven Facts

Saturn is also the flattest planet. Saturn turns on its axis once every 10 hours and 34 minutes. It takes Saturn about 29.4 years to complete a revolution.

Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and the second largest in our solar system. Saturn is the most distant planet that can be seen by the naked eye and is known for its giant rings circling the planet. Saturn is named after the Roman god, "Saturnus".

Saturn is made mostly of hydrogen. Saturn is known as a "gas giant" since its made through many layers of gas.

Since Saturn orbits differently than the other planets, sometimes throughout the year we see different rings and other times we see other rings.

Saturn & The Sun

Saturn's Rings

There are billions of ring particles in the entire ring system. The ring particle sizes range from tiny, dust-sized icy grains to a few particles as large as mountains.

The rings are believed to be pieces of comets, asteroids or shattered moons that broke up before they reached the planet

There isn't an exact amount of rings, in fact, there aren't very many estimates either. The rings of Saturn are very interesting and are also very puzzling.

The sun is a 4.6 billion year old yellow dwarf star at the center of our solar system. It has a diameter of 1,392,684 km and an enormous mass, nearly 333,060 times greater than Earth's.

Saturn's average distance from the sun is about 1.4 billion km (891 m). There isn't an exact distance from the sun because Saturn follows an elliptical orbit which makes it closer to the sun at times and farther away from the sun at other times.

Saturn & Its Moons

Saturn: Measurements

Saturn has 62 moons, ranging from small to enormous. 53 of these moons are named and 13 of the 62 moons have a diameter greater than 50 km. The most known of Saturn's moons is "Titan" which is the second largest moon in the solar system.
