The Flapper Lifestyle

Flappers outfits consisted of knee-length, dropped waist line, sleeveless or v-shaped front and back. It showed skin top and bottom but kept the torso covered. Common features of the dress included beads, sequins, lace, fringes, chiffon, satin, flowers, shiny and shimmery fabric, uneven hemlines, peter pan collar. Always have a hat or scarf. They smoked in public, danced suggestively, and openly flirted with boys.

What is a Flapper

Flapper is defined as a fashionable young woman intent on enjoying herself and flouting conventional standards of behavior. Going against standards of society, they wore skirts just below the knee, make-up for the first time, and cut their hair into really short bob.

Women's Roles in Previous Times

  • Women were expected to stay home and do the house work

  • Women could not vote

  • Women were expected to wear long skirts and corsets

Compared to the 1920s

  • The number of working women increased due to World War 1

  • Women were given the right to vote

  • Women starting wearing clothes that were better for everyday activities

  • Flappers danced and smoked in public

  • Divorce was made easier

Women's Rights

August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment was added it to the consituition declaring that they, like men, deserve all the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Birth Control

Margaret Sanger was an influential woman in the fight to encourage the use of contraception. Birth control was just becoming an option for women. The 1965 supreme court court case decided that the private use of contraception was a constitutional right.
