Chemicals in Ontario Food Chain

by;Akash.b, Athisayaa, Faizaan, kate

How this affect humans

Why this problem is harmful?

-this toxic not only affect the animals and ecosystem but affect us and our lives. We eat seafood and fish but if the fish has consumed any foods containing these toxic now it has been involved in the process of bioaccumulation and now if you are eating it and the toxic has spread to you and now you have possible toxic that we created.

Chemicals can also kill animals

-It affects animals that are exposed to these toxins. Mostly fishes and animals that consume fishes including us.

-It affects humans if we consume an organism that has had exposure to these chemicals which in most cases are seafood like fish, crab, etc

It can get into our precious great lakes which provide the whole ecosystems with water and food, habitat for a lot of animals

For example:Suppose that a gardener sprays his/her garden with pesticide that was made to control/kill insects that destroy his/her garden, a small amount of that pesticide will be washed off by the rain into rivers, streams, and lakes near the garden. The pesticide will be ingested by fish living in those bodies of water. Those fish can be eaten by larger animals and that tiny chemical/pesticide can cause a large problem to the underwater and other animal food chain who depend on fish and other ocean creatures for food

how to prevent this problem

-we can throw away or recycle of anti-biotics and other chemicals in the proper manner

-we learn and educate other on this problem

-we can find alternatives to objects that we use that causes the chemicals to be in the food chain. for example; riding bike, walking instead of driving car which emit dangerous fumes.

-we could stop the input of human toxic into canadian water

-the government could strengthen laws based upon dumping toxic waste in the dump

Chemicals found in lakes

Some of the chemicals found in the lakes are

-antibiotics

-anti epileptics

-beta blockers

-anti inflammation

-pesticide

-PCB

-dioxin

How the toxics enter the environment

-pesticides enter our environment by the rain, the rain washes the freshly sprayed pesticides into creaks which make their ways into river, and oceans

-Smoke stakes and automobiles emissions return to the ground during the rain

-Chemicals and anti-biotics are flushed down toilets

-Poured into sinks

-toxic chemicals are dumped in town dumps

-sewage companys pump dirty, intoxicated waste directly into waterways

-leaks in pipelines can lead to toxics getting into the waterways and other ecosystems

Thank you for

Watching

Chemicals found in the food chain

Some of the chemical are

-Zinc

-Copper

-nickel

-lead

-chromium

-mercury

Bioaccumulation

-Bioaccumalation refers to the accumulation of substances such as pesticide or other chemicals in an organisms that is absorbed at a rate faster than the body can lose these chemicals by catabolism and excretion In other words bioaccumulation occurs when any organism absorbs possible toxic.

-Thus if toxic stays longer in the body it has a greater risk of chronic poisoning.
