Irony is a type of figurative language that is used to signify the opposite of what is expected to occur.
Examples in the fault in our stars:
In the fault in our stars there wasn’t any single sentence examples of irony in the book. However many readers found it ironic that the main character with stage 4 cancer outlived the character with the first stage.

Similes present in the fault in our stars
Definition: Giving human specific traits or attributes to something that is non-human.
(hence the name)
Examples in the fault in our stars:
In the fault in our stars, many of the characters have some form of cancer. Two characters, Augustus and Hazel are at a group support meeting. Augustus is talking about how people let cancer consume their lives. He then goes on to say *“Cancer is in the growth business, Right?” The taking-people-over business but surely you haven’t let it take over prematurely”. Augustus says this to convey that you shouldn’t let cancer control your thoughts and your lives. This is an example of personification because he is giving cancer a human attribute of running a business.
* this can also be used as a pun(explained later).
Definition of simile: A figure of speech comparing two completely different things

The fault in our stars, A main character, Augustus had osteosarcoma. In an e-mail he is sending, he is talking about how people try and wish to leave a mark on the world before he perishes. He explains this to the person he is sending the email to by saying “We are like a bunch of dogs squirting on fire hydrants”. He is explaining figuratively how people try to leave a mark, whether it has meaning or not being rather relentless. This is a simile because he is comparing two things(People's actions and dogs) using like or and.
Hyperbole
Summary
The book the fault in our stars is chock- full of great uses of figurative language. Figurative language is used to gain interest in a book and to create a better picture for the reader. The book contains all of the aforementioned literary devices except for alliteration. It contains allusion, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, hyperbole, irony, and personification. All of these literary devices tie in, to create a great book that is full of interesting wordplay. The fault in our stars is about a young girl who s to live with cancer,. She ends up meeting a charming boy who also has cancer and their overall love story. The overall theme of The fault in our stars is Love triumphs through hardship. Augustus and Hazel both have forms of cancer, and that is what keeps them from wanting to fall in love, though they eventually do despite the hardships that follow due to their Cancers. Despite the hardships, their love stays strong, even when their stories take an unexpected turn. This breath-taking novel written by John Green is definitely one the best books i’ve ever read. Written in 2012, it is rather recent and will transcend time. The fault in our stars features a serious, yet playful and sometimes sarcastic tone that fits well with the characters and their personality traits and behavior. The book is very true to the theme and sticks to it and never waivers throughout the book. The characters are very relatable, and despite the conflict of the book, it is relatable in a way that the characters are very much concerned over an inevitable end for all, which is ultimately death. The characters are mostly those with some form of cancer, so it is very close so it is a common topic within the book. Despite that not being a concern for me, the author so greatly makes this relatable as you never know what could happen and to take life as Augustus describes it, a rollercoaster with ups and downs and turns. The book is so greatly written and beloved that in 2014, The Fault in Our Stars even got it’s own movie. Though many things aren’t certain, one thing that is that this book will always transcend time and be known as a great book.

Definition : an exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally
Examples in the fault in our stars:
Hazel in the beginning of the book is forced to attend group support meetings with other kids with cancer. She finds the speaker and leader of the group, Patrick especially annoying. To demonstrate her annoyance, she says “We heard him recount his sad story for the thousandth time…”. This is a hyperbole because it is not meant to be taken literally and she did not hear him recite the story one thousand times
Allusion
Definition: An indirect reference
Examples in The Fault in Our Stars:
Though there are a few examples of allusion in the fault in our stars, the most obvious one is the title itself. The title “The fault in our stars” is an indirect reference to the Shakespearean novel “Julius Caesar”. It directs to How their fate, like their cancer can prevent from a happily ever after, like in the famous Novel.s “She’s still taking on water, a desert blessing, an ocean curse.” This is an idiom because you can’t tell the message from the literal meaning.
Definition: A pun is a use of figurative language that is used to display the different possible meanings of a word, normally in a humorous manner.
Examples of puns in the fault of our stars:
Whilst explaining his thoughts on cancer, a character named Augustus Waters says a short sentence that is a pun. He said “Cancer is in the growth business.” This is a pun because it displays the possible meanings of the word. Cancer rapidly divides and grows which causes tumors, hence when he says it’s in the growth business. The second meaning is when he says it’s in the growth business, meaning that it quickly grows and reproduces.

Definition: A literary device used to convey sound.
Examples in The Fault in Our Stars:
In page 25, Hazel is explaining a medication she took to slow cancer growth. The medication only works in 30% of trials, so there was a small chance of it working for Hazel, but it works for her. To convey excitement she says “Huzzah, phalanxifor!” This is an onomatopoeia because it displays a sound she made.
