M and D stand for...

Multiplication and Division!

In a P.E.M.D.A.S. problem, solve multiplication and division third.

Example: 4+(7x5)x3 x2-3

.

Exponents

Firstly, solve parentheses. That equals 35, and once you solve the exponent (equaling 9), you must follow P.E.M.D.A.S. protocol, doing multiplication/division next. 35x9=315, which multiplied by 2=630, divided by 3, equals 210. Lastly, add the 4, for a total of 214.

Note:Multiplication and division are both equally important so whether multiplication or division comes first, you solve the leftmost problem first.

In a P.E.M.D.A.S. problem, exponents come second for solving!

4+(7x5)+3

Example:

Since 4+(7x5)=39, and 3 squared is 9, you add the 4 last, then add up both sums to get 48.

In a P.E.M.D.A.S. problem, solve addition and subtraction last.

Example:4+(7x5)x3 x2-3+9-17

A and S stand for...

Addition and Subtraction!

2

Firstly, solve parentheses, exponents, multiplication, and division, which totals to 210. Then solve addition and subtraction problems. The first problem of that type is the total plus 4, equaling 214.The next problem is that plus 9, which equals 223. The final problem is 223-17, which gives us a total value of 206.

.

Note: As you would do for multiplication and division, you solve the leftmost addition/subtraction first, no matter which one it is.

P.E.M.D.A.S.

Today, we will learn how to solve multi-step P.E.M.D.A.S. problems!

(Parentheses!)

P stands for...

In a P.E.M.D.A.S. problem, you always solve the problems in parentheses first!

Example: 4+(7x5)

7x5=35, then plus 4 is 39.

NOTE: You read a math problem from left to right. So if there are more than 1 set of parentheses, do the leftmost set first.
