UTS is associated with intrafamilal marriages which suggest an autosomal recessive transmission
There are no environment factors that forced the affected individuals to walk on all fours although some auhtors suggested the environment has a strong determining effect on quadrupedality
May be related to the theory of human backward evolution or de-evolution which is the notion that species revert into more "primitive" forms over time.
Biological Changes
Abnormalities to chromosomes 9p24
A deformity of VLDLR is found on chromosome 9p24
What is UTS?
Habitual Quadrupedalism
UTS is characterized by cerebellar hypoplasia
loss of balance and coordination
impaired cognitive abilities and habitual quadrupedal gait on hands and feet
Is the the primary characteristic of Uner Tan Syndrome
There are two types of quadrupedal locomotion:
Diagonal sequence
Lateral sequence
Types of UTS
In diagonal sequence the foot touches the ground followed by the contralateral hand
In lateral sequence the foot touches the ground followed by the ipsilateral hand.
