If the nucleus was the size of a tennis ball the nearest electron would be 5 km away

Structure of the atom

Elements

Different elements have different atoms with different numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons.

4Fe + 3O2 -> 2Fe2O3

Atoms

Reactions

Atoms are the building blocks of the universe.

Known about for a long time but the structure wasn't discovered until 1909 by Rutherford.

When a reaction happens the atoms don't change. You still have all the same atoms you started with, they are just arranged differently.

Conservation of mass

Mass of products = mass of reactants

Atoms

Demonstrate an understanding that:

  • Atoms are the smallest part of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction
  • During chemical reactions atoms are not created or destroyed
  • During chemical reactions atoms are rearranged to make new products with new properties
