- Engagements lasted from 3 weeks to a few months
- Engagement was an extension of the courtship
- If a man wished to marry a women he must first have her Father's approval

- French courts wouldn't recognize marriages without parental consent
- Before a marriage could occur the dowry had to be settled
- In England the legal marrying age was 21

- Young girls had coming out balls or blancs (in France)
- Usually occurred at age 17 or 18
- Girls were taught from a young age skills for catching a suitor, like dancing, singing and playing piano
- All courting occurred under the watchful eye of a chaperone
- “It was not yet essential for the bride to wear white, although white was gaining popularity. Alternatively, she might wear another light color such as silver or blue, and she would also wear her bonnet inside the church.”
- King Louis XIV gave Marie Antoinette a diamond encrusted fan for a wedding present
